Sounds like the engine had some abuse in its past. I'm pushing 101k miles using nothing but 5w30 M1 and don't burn an ounce of oil, changing it every 3,500 miles or so. I doubt changing weights would help much... could try the 'magical' German Castrol 0w30...

I burn about the same 1-2 quarts every 3000 miles i just add new quart for the remainor of time before i change my oil. I notice since i changed from 10-30 to 10-40w that it burns less oil so maybe you could try to do that. oh I changed to Royal Purple from Mobil 1.

127K and it didnt burn a drop ... not until the H/C swap. Now its burning oil and there is oil in the intake.
Now Im looking into upgrading the PCV system and making sure the rocker bolts are properly sealed.

No matter how you look at it, that's way above average. I'd start with the PCV system, maybe go with a catch can and see how much oil it catches. If that's not the problem, then it might be time for a rebuild. When I built my engine, it was burning a quart every 300 miles, and it wasn't smoking, but there was oil residue on the back bumper.
