ls1/ls6 crate engine????
my ls1 has 130k miles on it, and i see/hear signs of it going out???
so im doing little homework on what direction to take...
1) rebuilt the ls1 $1000.00 and get a new head and cam package.....3k
http://www.motorsporttech.com/fbody_engine01.asp
or
2) buy "new" ls6 crate engine 3k
http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...3-P1625C0.aspx
i just dont know, if anyone can share some light on the pros and cons of each...the car is a dd and i will be doing most of work myself...so the crate engine is more attractive since its a swap, where opening up the engine would be a learning proceedure.....

The crate engine will require you to send back a usable core, and will most likely have to match what you purchase. I don't think you can buy an LS6 and return an LS1 as a core b/c of the different block and heads. If it was me I would buy a forged short block from one of the site sponsors. You then have the choice to reuse your stock heads and cam or save up for performance peices. As long as your stock engine is in running condition you can try to recoup some money by selling some or all of it.
Of course you still have the option of rebuilding your engine, but it doesn't sound like you are experienced/comfortable with this. It will require some machine work and special tools that you most likely don't own. Or you can pay someone else to rebuild it for you. It my opinion neither of these options will be as cost effective as buying the forged shortblock.
Hope this helps.

i thougth much about swaping to ls6 when my motor spuned a bearing, but i thougth it wasint worth it hp-wise,
than i builded a H/C/I ls1 and that was so hugly more expensive than it was planned that i kinda regret to havn't purchased a ls6 to start with

Something's fishy with the part number of the $3K LS6...this is the correct motor for an LS6 longblock to swap into an F-Body:
http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...8399-P9C0.aspx
The $3K LS6 looks to be remanufactured and the one I just posted is new...so I guess that's the difference.
I did the LS6 swap into my '98 Z28 and put down 378 RWHP...I just added a PowerBond pulley, so I'm thinking I should actually be at 385 RWHP now.
I did a complete write-up on the LS6 swap and you can read it at my website in my sig.

The 12498399, which is what I bought, comes with everything you see listed in the picture on the link I posted earlier. Yes, it comes with a water pump and yes it comes with a C5 pulley. The F-Body oil pan, and oil pickup are included in a box in the crate. I sold my the C5 oil pan and C5 pulley that came on the crate motor on a Corvette forum for $350 to recoup some of my money.
If you read the description of the $3K LS6, you'll see it says "Only original replacement parts are used in every GM Goodwrench remanufactured engine." Which leads me to believe it is a rebuilt motor. The LS6 that's a little less than $5K is a BRAND NEW motor. So the choice is yours.

I'm contemplating a LS6 swap myself, although I don't have any problems with my 94k-miles LS1 now. I originally wanted to do a cam swap, but by the time I priced all the parts (for this much mileage) and the level of work involved, swapping an engine is actually easier, IMO.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I was going to go this route (89017653) but was informed by GM that this is an industrial LS6 not the ZO6 LS6. He said it was used in boats and other industrial applications. Said it had differerent internals and was not 405 hp (he didn't say what the hp was). Has anyone bought and dyno'd one of these? HELP
