Default Rebuilding engine to like new state

What really wears out in an engine? Let's say I want to make it so it will run like new again, what would I change? Bearings and piston rings come to mind. What else? This is not for an LS1, but in general.

Rings, bearing, valvesprings, pushrods, If its not a roller set-up, I would say the lifters and cam, oil pump, timing chain, all gaskets. I know its something I left out. Some add it if I forgot.
