Question cam makers?

whats the difference between the cams why buy from the car shop's/cam company's and the cam shops who ground the to spec for you but are not a big business or nationally known? the reason i ask is, I have a friend who can get this place to ground me a cam to my exact spec for real cheap! they use a stock cam and then reground it to spec? cam experts give me the "pro's" and "con's" of this!

There are limits you get to when regrinding a stock cam. With any worthwhile grinding, you go beyond the hardening in the cam surface. What you're left with is a softer area that can go flat in a very short time period.

Pros? Low cost, precise valve events.

Cons? Either limited lift/ramp rates or limited longevity.
