Default pushrod length with TSP 5.3L heads

I will be using a TR 224-112 cam, TSP 2.5 5.3L heads, new stock LS1/LS6 lifters, stock rocker, etc. I will be using the stock GM head gaskets. TSP recommended 7.4's while Patrick said he would probably do the 7.425's. What do you guys think?

I am not sure if one is easier on the valvetrain or if one will keep it quieter?

By the way, I didn't have TSP mill the heads more than they normally do. They told me they usually take off .004-.005 thousandths off to clean the surfaces.

Concerning length, what head bolts are you using, early model or late model? Is the length selected because of the block year or year of head?

I went with the 7.4s with my 5.3/MS3 combo. Your best bet might be to get a pushrod length checker just to be sure

I am using new ARP head bolts, not studs. I am not sure what you are asking in terms of the block or the head? I honestly didn't know the headbolts varied. I am using them on a 2000 Z28 if that matters any.

GM perf parts lists 2 head bolt kits for LS1:

1997-2003 long style #12498545
2004 & up short style #17800568

So if block is 00 and heads are 05, which to use?

P.S. I see where ARP also list 2 different numbers.

wondering why you didn't have them milled? I would at least do .010 or .015 for more compression

Depending on the size of his cam he might not of had a choice to mill lol. If the block is a 2000 you have the long bolts. 2004 is when GM changed the blocks where they have all short bolts.

Both will work, the 7.425 will add .015 preload and make things a little qieter.

I thought he was using the 224/224? If he is, he definitely has room to mill, and I think he would be happier with the results as well!

I have a TR224 cam on the way. I am using the TSP 5.3 L heads as well. They recommended that I did not mill them. I probably could have had them do it but I just went with what they recommended.

maybe i didn't make it clear in the first post. i am sure i would have room to mill. i just went with what TSP said. so you are thinking 7.425 with the 5.3L heads and a TR224 cam using stock GM gaskets?

Not thinking, I'm sure.
7.400 will work but a bit noisier (less preload)
