Default Milling/decking LS1 heads

Im working on a low buck budget build for a magazine. We're doing a new cam, lifters, Pro Magnum rockers, pushrods, springs and timing set. We want to keep it on the cheap side of the way to get power out of your LS1. With a decent cam, LS6 intake, ported TB, reworked heads, LT headers and a all new computer from Howell we hope to make some decent drivable power.

I've done some research but havent found too much on milling/decking stock LS1 heads to get the compression around, 10.8-1.

I've read a lot about switching to different heads, but would like to see what the experts here think about working with the heads I already have, the LS1 heads.

I'm no expert, but I milled my stock heads to bring the compression up. I also went with a .040 gasket to help out the quench.

if you'r doing a max effort build, i'd use cometic 0.036's and mill the heads 0.030.

thats what i ran on my stock bottomend.

I just put together my setup and it's heads milled .015 (61cc chambers, ls6 heads), and cometic .040. Should be around 11.5:1 or so. Definitely worth it IMO since premium gas is already a must. I could have just milled the heads some more and run a stock or a thicker gasket but i was trying to keep from shrouding the valves. Either way i'd definitely up the compression, it's free horsepower!!!

William, ya you're right.

I was just talking to the motor guy today and we talked about getting it up around 11.5 or so. He's doing more research as he hasnt done any LS1 heads yet, but plently of other heads. He wants to see what he can get out of them and keep it reliable and very drivable.

Also talked to a friend at Comp Cams and he said anything from 10.8 - 11.5 would be great, and would push for 11.5.

So anyone else??? I thought this IS the place to ask questinos and get feedback from the LS guys...??

static compression doesn't mean that much i've come to find. Look up the dynamic calculator on here and work it out for your specific cam. I find my static will be around 11.5-11.6 which is fairly high but with my cam bleeding off some compression my dynamic is only 8.3-4 i believe (have to check again to be sure). Either way jump that compression up as high as you can safely it'll be worth it

Good luck!
William
