Question Cometic gasket not fitting over dowels. WTF?

I am trying to do a PTV clearance check on my passenger side. For some reason, my new Cometic gasket will not fit over the dowels. I know there is a front and back, and I quadruple checked to make sure the coolant ports on the block lined up with the holes in the gasket. I even tried installing “wrong side up” to verify. I installed the driver head previously and that gasket went on fine (as soon as I placed it right side up ). Now, I am sure I could force the gasket on, but forcing stuff makes me uncomfortable. I do not want to bugger up a $77 gasket. Any suggestions? Am I just a pansy that needs to put a little muscle into it? I am going to take a break and grab something to eat. Hopefully someone will chime in with some useful info. Thanks.

mine were very tight at first. Make sure you are pushing down (gently) on the gasket, with it being parallel to the deck surface.

Yea, they can be a royal PITA if they're not put on perfectly level.
