My oil consultant, who has over 20 years experience analyzing motor oil, does not know anything about Havoline synthetic 5-40.

I have used it once or twice, however. I suspect it is a dino-based sythetic and not a true synthetic, however... Unfortunatly, I forgot to read the label.

To be safe, stick with something the Patman recommends highly - Royal Purple synthetic...

Hehe, Robert knows how much I hate Royal Purple!

I haven't heard too much about Havoline 5w40, I'm not even sure if it's a real synthetic or a group 3 petroleum based "pseudo synthetic"

If you can find me the MSDS on it I can find out if it's a real synthetic or not.

It's not a synthetic, the CAS64742547 number means it uses a group 3 base oil. That doesn't always mean it's not a good oil, just that you are paying synthetic prices for a highly refined petroleum oil.

Can you ask your oil analyst if there any way to tell from reading the label whether an oil is petroleum based?

Is the number you referred to printed on the label; does a specific series of numbers indicate a dino-based product versus a true synthetic?

Robert, you can't tell by the label, since in North America, a lot of group 3 based oils are labelling themselves as full synthetic. To find that number you need to get the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) from the website of the oil company (or sometimes you have to email them to get it)

In Europe the group 3 based oils are not allowed to be labelled as synthetic, since technically speaking they are not. Over there the group 3 oils are known as blends.

OK so I'm looking at the MSDS for Havoline synthetic...

...the data sheet does not say it is a dino-based product or is a synthetic, however. How do you know it is dino-based.

Have you used all of your Royal Purple yet?

I know it's hydrocracked oil because of the CAS64742547 number listed there.

I'm on my last interval with Royal Purple in my wife's car, yes. There are only two quarts left of the free oil they sent me.
