Is my oil pressure low?
At idle after its warm, it stays just a tad over 20. When I rev it, it goes up fine but the idle pressure just looks a little low compared to my 2000 M6. I have a 98 A4 now.

Re: Is my oil pressure low?
mine is at 20# at normal operating temp. i am kinda worried because i did not think that would be a sufficient enough oil pressure. so is the 20# normal

Re: Is my oil pressure low?
most people are seeing 35-45 psi when warm. Your oring might be starting to wear.If anything go with a thicker oil, I went too Mobil1 5w30 and thats when i messed everything up in my car. I still dont know what caused the low oil pressure. My guess is the oring

Re: Is my oil pressure low?
U8dust and Rogue,
Are these non factory motors meaning aftermarket built? 20 psi hot with 5-30 is acceptable for a built motor, although if this is the case, I would suggest stepping up to a slightly thicker oil. When the engine builder did your motor between de-burring the block gallies and the oil pan etc.. 2.5 clearance on the mains and rods that pressure seems to be the normal situation unless somebody can tell me I'm off base here? It only takes 7 psi to keep the lifters static and 40+ at WOT is what I was told is acceptable for a built clearanced motor.
Joe.

With all due respect to ARE, I would like to see some oil analysis numbers on that thick oil. I highly doubt they have done any. I still maintain that it is too thick, it's going to just rob you of power and MPG and create higher oil temps.
A lot of engine builders just go right out and recommend 20w50 without doing any research. All the lubrication experts I talk with say that the 50wt oils are not needed in these engines, the clearances aren't large enough to neccessitate such a thick oil.

Remember that our oil pump gauges are calibrated for air pressure, and that our gauges show 14.7 PSI lower than what it actually is. So 20 PSI is really 34.7 PSI which is totally fine.
