Question What kinda gains are usually seen from the GM Hotcam?

Not getting one anytime soon, but i'm gathering up info for when I am ready i'll have done my research...

I'd be looking for a cam for a DD, that sounds pretty beefy but not all out lopey like a top fuel car

I really liked the sound of the Torquer v.2 but heard you can't run the A/C. The car would definately need the use of A/C as I live in Phoenix and it gets in the 120's sometimes! Of course the Torquer 2's specs might be a little more aggressive cam than what i'm really looking for so...

I've heard good things about the 224/224's and the GM Hotcam sounded pretty good as well...

I'd probably be getting heads at the same time, but usure yet as to which one's... heard good things about the AFR 205's and Trickflows... I like the price of the Patriots, but the price also scare's me... as I can't help but think of the old saying "you get what you pay for"... I'd hate to go cheap on something and blow my engine up on my DD just because I didn't want to fork out some extra cash... I could be totally wrong... Just being cautious...

I just got the 224R installed, and I would go with some patriot castings for heads. It's a good combo and will make over 400whp with a tune on an M6. I daily drive my car and can barely tell it has a cam. It has a nice lope, but it's not like a prostock car or anything.

Good gas milage also!

BTW, I have an Artic Z28, and my name is Wes too. Weird eh?

how funny

thanks for the info... your talking my language! Between 400-500 HP is what I'm shooting for... anything must be better than what i'm at now...

pretty much stock with lid, K&N, SLP LM1 cat-back...

BBK LT's, BBK ORY, BBK SSI Intake Manifold, BBK Throttle Body, and Tune within the next couple weeks... so that should give me a big boost in power... but the H/C install would be my next step...

The hotcam is supposed to be good for about 20rwhp. For the time and effort I would go with something like the TR224. Still good drivability and a nice gain in power.

what am I looking at in the difference between the 112 or 114 lsa? I've read the write ups on the LSA but am still a little puzzled as to what it actually is... I know the higher the number the better for emissions, but that's not necasarilly an issue for me as i live in AZ and emissions aren't that strict here it seems...

If I were M6, I would go larger than a Hotcam.

If I had the cash AND wanted to stay conservative, I'd go AFR 205s and 224/228 112.

A hotcam is worth more than 20rwhp. There are plenty of people who have run low 12's with bolt ons and hotcam, possibly even into the 11's. It's a great choice for someone on a serious budget, but as always, if you can afford more, get a custom. I loved my 224/228 581 112 XER cam. I ran 119.2 mph full weight car, stock suspension, all bolt ons.

A hot cam here in AZ will NOT perform like you're looking for. A 224 cam would be your best bet. Most 224 cam only cars here in AZ put down 370-375ish whp with some strong low-mid range power.

Do the 224 cam's have those aggressive ramp rates that beat up the valve springs? I would prefer to find something that's easier on the valvetrain, which is why the HotCam is attractive to me.

u can still daily drive a 228/228 on a 113 lsa with some afr 205 heads. The shop here is doing mine now with all the supporting mods and just finished an identical setup except for diff headers and it put down 450rwhp and 420rwtq.I heard that the drivability is great and a lot of power through the entire powerband.

Those 224/228 type cams make their power using aggressive cam lobe profiles. XER/XFI are very slappy. I don't know that I'd recommend a hotcam with a cylinder head. It's not designed for that.

I ran a 233/233 .595/.595 112 for 43000 miles and the springs were still good when I replaced them..I used the PRC platnium duals..if you do the hot cam you will wish you went bigger after you put it in..224/224 is a good cam a 224/228 is a good cam that will make good power under the curve which is where you will be 90% of the time..if you are going to the drag strip every weekend you will want something larger than that..

I will personally vouch for the 224/228 581 XER cam. I'm looking again trying to decide if I should just get that same cam or step up to 228/230 58X/59X or try the PatrickG cam...... My guess is there probably isn't any real difference between the 3.

You could look into something around 228/232 .60X"/.60X" 112 LSA. This will make the power you are talking about. Or you could be like everyone else and do no research, throw in a 224/224 and call it a day.
