Due to some mishaps, I have to pull my driver side head, to remove a pen magnet that broke off on lifter. I am in the middle of a cam swap, and a stall swap. Should I just pull both heads, and replace both head bolts, both head gaskets, and get all new lifters? My motor has 120k on it with no rebuild! What head bolts and head gaskets should I get? What lifters should I get?

Also, I am changing my oil pump, and I can't get the damn pickup tube bolt back in, how the hell are you supposed to do this!

Try a real telescoping magnet first.

If you have to pull the one head then just pull the one head. No sense in buying new lifters and pulling heads unless your replacing the heads in the first place.

OEM heads bolts are fine and you will need a new oem gasket for the side you pull.

The pickup tube bolt is just hard to do. You need to drop the pan as far as possible and then contort your body and hand to fit in there and screw it in. I ended up facing away from the motor and doing it backhanded. Small hands work better here. Some have tapped the bolt to the wrench and start it that way. It can be done just needs patience and maybe a friend with smaller hands or longer fingers.

A few beers or pharmaceuticals doesnt hurt either, you need to relax and stop letting the car kick your ***. #1 rule in my book is being relaxed when working on my car. Get tense and you can make quick decisions that can haunt you sometimes.

Well the motor has 120k on it..it needs some maintainance haha. I figure...since it will be off the road a bit, why not just do both gaskets and all new lifters? I don't want to be spinning the motor up and blow the gasket and have to do the other side a month later!

P.S. My cam is 240/244 .608/.596 113 with a 111ICL. It's a Vindicator...should I get a thicker head gasket so I don't smash the valve haha?

I tied some fishing line to it just to mkae sure it wouldn't fall and held it with one finger while turning it with an open end wrench.

You should have checked with Vengeance on the PTV, I'm not good with that.
What I'm saying is the lifters arent about to go, no need to swap them and the heads gaskets dont just go either, this isnt an old school 350. They are hydraulic lifters they just ride on the cam and push the pushrod up.

Thats a big cam, you will need to use high rpms to get the power out of it. It wouldnt hurt to repalce the lifters but its not needed. I wouldnt pull heads just to do lifters. Even if you are pulling one head already. IF you have to pull the heads then look for some used heads for 550-600 if you can swing it. Then I'd replace the lifters.

You can find used heads cheap from guys that are spending bick bucks on better heads. Look for some used 5.3's or even a newer stock ls6/2 if it will fit head would be better than you 98 heads. Plenty of choices for bargain shopping on heads.

Insurance would be to replace the lifter cups when you have the heads off. It certainly wouldnt hurt to get new lifters but I've not heard about stock lifter failures, just turning in the cups.

Whats the shape of the broken piece of the pen magnet, a lot of place have those littel claw grabber things on the end of a narrow flextube. You migh be able to get the claw around the magnet pice then just pull it out. Do you know the tool I'm talking about?

^^^ with the right bending of the claw prongs you may just be able to get it out, worth $3.49 to try I think.

Damn, well if you really have to pull the head, just get a set of heads while you're at it. I know that's what I would do.

3) 2006 LS2 243 casting heads, 8K miles, same as LS6 heads except these have solid stem valves, will ad pics in the next day or so. $475.00 plus shipping ,

should be about 50

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ighlight=heads

I'm telling you man my telescoping magnet looks just like an antenna from a boom box. Little tiny head but the thing is strong like bull. It works great. I've fished many a thing from intake runner or even threaded nuts with it.http://motors.search.ebay.com/243-he...40QQsacatZ6000

I say you pony up the $475 plus shipping and get those damn heads. They will be better than yours and are worth the money. Should be about 50 to ship, I've shipped a few heads. DHL is the way to go. Cost me 43 last time.

Ok pull the heads and follow my plan above for the $475 ls2 heads. They flow better than yours and your not going to like your heads once you see the combustion chambers and gunked up valves and such.
