TR 230/224 cam
First off... sorry, but the SEARCH feature does not work for me. No matter what I search for I come up with no results. So again, sorry for asking the same old question.
Here's the car: 99 TA, A4 - TSP lid, 3.73s, cutout. Thats about it. Looking for a cam I think, and I've had my eyes set on the TR 230/224 111LSA. I like the powerband and I don't mind a choppy idle. My knowledge with cams more or less sucks... I know the definition of things like LSA, but I don't know how they affect the cam. I know that the low 111LSA would give it a pretty choppy idle, but what else does the low LSA do for it?

Re: TR 230/224 cam
I trap 110.5MPH with some LS1 Edit Tuning, Yank 2800 Stall, MACs, Lid, Cutout and DR's.
My cam is on a 110LSA, they now offer it as a 111. You will need a GOOD tuner for this cam in an A4, and a good stall is a MUST or you may have surging issues, or the car may creep forward when you stop. Thunder recommended a 4600-4800 stall when I bought mine but I already had the 2800. Honestly, I should have gone much higher.
With your gear though, you should get KILLER times if the tuning is good. I love my TR230/224 cam, pulls like a madman above 3k.

Re: TR 230/224 cam
With the 3.73s, will a stall converter be absolutely necessary?? I plan on getting soon, but will the car be driveable with the stock converter? Things I plan on doing in the next several months: LTs, converter, and LS6 intake. However, at this point I feel like if I don't do the cam now, I won't do it for a long time, thats why I'm putting the cam in front of other "necessary" boltons.

Re: TR 230/224 cam
I have this cam at the moment.
It idles at 950 rpm has a cammy note.
I have 3.73 gears I would reccommend higher.
I have Vig 3200 stall I would reccommend higher (at least 4000)
The cam produces good power but you wont get the car to go anywhere without having the right gears and stall.

Re: TR 230/224 cam
I still recommend a stall. If you have to bump the idle (Mines fine at 850) you may have creeping problems or surging when you stop. The looseness of the converter really helps here. It MAY work, but IMHO you will be disappointed with the results, since this cam it a top end power cam and has little low end grunt which you would need with a stock converter IMHO. I'm running a 2800 stall with a 3.0str and it's not even close to enough. If you have plans for a stall, you can try it out but i'd HIGLY recommend a tranny cooler even with the stock stall. Any other questions, just ask!

Re: TR 230/224 cam
What you need is a set of used JBA shorties!!
You know my feelings on a converter.... best bang for the buck mod on our A4's. Have you thought about the 224 at all? It runs pretty strong in my car, but if you are wanting more lope you could get it on a 112. I'll see you this weekend bro. Later.

Re: TR 230/224 cam
If anybody has an overlay of a TR224 vs. a TR230/224, that might help things out here.

Only change was the cam.
I would highly recommend at least 3.73s and a fairly large stall converter for this. If you don't have these parts or don't plan on getting them at a later date, the TR224 112/114 would be a better choice IMHO.

A buddie of mine put this cam in his 2000 SS w/M6. Car has Hooker LT's, LS6 intake, custom y-pipe, 12 bolt w/410's. Dynoed with stock SS 10 spokes. No short belt or other dyno tricks. 393 rwhp. I'm seriously looking at changing my cam and getting a 230/224.

Re: TR 230/224 cam
This is VERY clost to Thunders recommendation for the 230/224 cam. Only difference was they suggested 4600-4800 stall.
With your setup and a 230/224, you're car will run like a raped ape!

I have an A4, PT4400 stall, and 4.10 gears...am I to understand I have the setup that favors the 230 cam?

Re: TR 230/224 cam
It may be enough for the cam to work, but you'd get better results with a higher stall. That is exactly what thunder told me when I bought mine and told them I had a 2800 stall.

Re: TR 230/224 cam
im getting the 230/224 and a converter but not sure on the converter yet, prob around a 3500 wouldnt that be good enough?
If you do you will end up with a car that puts out more power and has worse habbits yet only goes as fast as a smaller cammed car.
Go for over 4000 rpm stall with this cam.
