Default Yella Terra rocker arm install howto done

If yall ever wanted to know whats involved with installing new rockers, I've documented it here:
http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=21

This can also be used for those who want to just check for bent pushrods if you ignore the stuff about setting up the yella terra rockers.

As always great write up. Can't say thanks enough I have used your site countless times and I don't think I would have attemped half the jobs I did on my car without your site.

Quick ? Why do you take so much time on the first pair? Is it just to find out wether you need the shims or not?

Great "How To" ....

I guess the 1/4 to 1/2 turn of the rocker bolt will get you enough preload. I have allways said that a little less is better than a little more, but, the stock LS1 preload is in fact 1 3/4 to 2 turns. Thats quite a bit more than what you suggest.

That 1 3/4 - 2 bolt turns was verified on two separate bone stock LS1 motors.

Also, on ported heads, I think applying black silicone sealant (Recommended by TEA) to the intake rocker bolt threads will insure a better seal on heads that have porting holes. Better than the Lock-Tite.

I just installed these last weekend with my H/C swap. Directions here seem great - as usual - THANKS

Can you consider doing a "motor" install page; this would be great for those considering a stroker...

Great writeup, as always.
Just a few friendly suggestions:
#1 RTV/Silicone should be used to seal the intake rocker bolts instead of Loc-Tite.
#2 Before installing the valve covers, I would recommend pouring Mobil-1 over the rocker arms after everything is installed to eliminate a dry start (hence the noise you heard when you first started yours up).

Thanks yall.

MyBlackSS, yes, the first one is the test pair of rockers. Once you know if you need the shims or not, you can just do the 7 others without having to check them individually.

Tin, I agree too that less is better. I've got MANY sets of pushrods in my garage and I've tried them all....the stock lifters simply dont seem to care how much preload you have or don't have. So, IMO, anywhere above 1/4 to 1/2 turn and less than 3 turns is fine.

Tin/Berger, some places I've talked with recommend silicon, others recommend locktite. I've always used locktite and it seems to work fine but I'll go ahead and put a note in that it may be ok to use a small bit of silicon as well.

Berger, IMO the noise heard on startup isn't the rocker arms making noise, it is the lifters not being pumped with oil yet. Pouring oil on top of the rockers shouldn't affect that at all.

RobertBartsh, I'd do the motor swap writeup if somebody donates me a motor to document. If some sponsor wants to sell lots of shortblocks, then hook me up! Hell, I can't even afford these Yella Terras, I documented this on a friends car with his rockers.

You could of if you'd have kept the F-body!!

Great write up as usual. Thanks for taking the time to keep everyone informed.

JMX:
There must be someone in your neck of the woods that would pay you a slight fee to swap a stroker short block (preferrably an iron-blocked 427) so you could document the shade-tree procedure ...so the rest of us self-centered soles could benefit?

Keep up the great work - my car needs more speed parts...

P.S. ...did you catch my narrative on the LS6 valley swap and not needing to cut the engine block? ...See; not all of us are self-centered!

I also installed "R" lifters with my H/C swap and Terra Yella rockers.

Question: Is the preload procedure desribed in your instructions the same with "R" lifters; I read somewhere R's should have less preload?

Thanks....

Ruf, Chris, JFM, Whitney, Thanks.

Robert, I generally don't like to charge money for helping out. It makes me feel more obligated and I usually don't have time for stuff like that. On my own car, however, I make time to do whatever I need (like install and document a bottom end install).

As for the Comp-R lifters, shoot for less than a full turn and you'll be fine, 1/4-1/2 turn would probably be optimal but without fully adjustible lifters I doubt you'll get that dead on. I had Comp-R's in my SS for over a year and the car ran and dyno'd the same regardless of how much preload I had on them so its not that much of an exact science in my experience.
