Default How can you tell the truck motors apart ?

I'm trying to buy a 5.3 truck motor and I spotted one in a junkyard but somebody aready removed it from the truck and they dont know if it's a 4.8 or a 5.3 .... ?? How can I tell just by looking at the motor.

Is there a way to tell the 4.8 / 5.3 / 6.0 apart by just looking at them ?

I know the 6.0s have 6.0 stamped into the side of the block. I remember reading the 4.8 / 5.3 thing on here a little while ago, but don't remember. I'll try searching for you.

Blamo! Quick and easy search. Took about 45 seconds.

Thanks I need to iron out my searching skills. I gave up after a few minutes.

Or take the pan off and get the crankshaft part number and call your local chevy dealer and he can tell you. The 4.8 has the shortest stroke of them all so it should be easy to tell. Good luck

Ok NOW.... Can you do this with the tranny still installed ????

agree with the google, thats what I have to result to usually but I have to say that the search is working allot better now than it was before. Can't help on your question other than the obvious of just looking for a form of stamping, etc.

only way to tell is to look at the pistons. pull some plugs and get a light in there. Dished pistons are 5.3, flat tops are 4.8.
