How can you tell the truck motors apart ?

How can you tell the truck motors apart ? I'm trying to buy a 5.3 truck motor and I spotted one in a junkyard but somebody aready removed it from the truck and they dont know if it's a 4.8 or a 5.3 .... ?? How can I tell just by looking at the motor.
Is there a way to tell the 4.8 / 5.3 / 6.0 apart by just looking at them ?

I know the 6.0s have 6.0 stamped into the side of the block. I remember reading the 4.8 / 5.3 thing on here a little while ago, but don't remember. I'll try searching for you.

Thanks I need to iron out my searching skills. I gave up after a few minutes.
Ok NOW.... Can you do this with the tranny still installed ????

Or take the pan off and get the crankshaft part number and call your local chevy dealer and he can tell you. The 4.8 has the shortest stroke of them all so it should be easy to tell. Good luck
