Default question for servicing after head cam..

after I install my head n cam..

should I still run 5.5 quarts of oil..

also I was recommeneded to run TR6 spark plugs vs the Tr55s.. from NGK..

also should I wait for any break in period?

my guess would be

still run 5.5 qts, run Tr6 plugs and im unsure about the break in period, because Ive heard after the cam, you should idle it from 2000-2500rpms...

so I dunno.

Your oil "capacity" is not going to change. The motor might use more oil now though so just keep a close eye on it.

I run TR6 plugs and I like them.

Hydraulic roller setups do not have a set break in period, if you install new valvesprings (which you should), you must heat cycle them 2 to 3 times. Drive the car around and let the car heat up to operating temp while keeping it under 2k rpm. Then park the car and let it cool. Do that 2 or 3 times and that is your break in period.

Also make sure you let the car warm up completely before getting on it with aftermarket valvesprings. They are brittle when cold.

With a little extra compression and a little more power, its wise to run the slightly cooler tr6, IMO. Ive had good luck with them.

TR6 it is... should any local autoparts store have em? I went to pepboys and they didnt have any..

also yeah the oil capacity shouldnt change since its the same pan, but I have a ported ls6 oil pump, and I just wanted to be certain..

ok Ill do that...

let it full heat up... drive around under 2k and let it get to proper temp and then let it cool off.. for say... an hour or so? and then repeat 3 times...

You really only need to heat cycle the springs one time.

The TR6 plugs can also be found under their stock # at the parts store which is 4177. I have bought them at autozone and adnavced auto parts.

Oil amount stays the same, just keep an eye on it to see if it eats any of it.

...why would it consume oil after a cam/head swap. If anything it should get better with new valve seals, seats ect.

F changing the pan, just change the gasket. It is a PITA though with the motor in the car because the k-member gets in the way.

I've got the same problem. I have a real slow oil leak from my pan after my cam swap. I'm going to drop my K member to replace the following parts: rod bolts, pan gasket, prothane motor mounts. I'm hoping it will be easier to replace the mounts w/ the k-member down. We'll see, I'll let you know next week.

well Im already taking it off the old K member and putting a new K member..

also... I was gonna do so, if there was an aftermarket lighter oil pan and/or better performing one in terms of drag racing/circuit and track racing.

I wonder how that can happen, only after a cam swap..

also how hard is it to change the rod bolts? I mean can you just do it by removing the pan? or do you have to take out the block and take off the main caps, crank etc?

cant you just take off the bolts and spin the crank til you get all rods?

I usually run between 6-7 quarts of oil, and like others say, shouldn't change after a cam swap.

I think 7 is excessive, you wanna run whats recommended. its 5.5, but Id say 6 is okay, maybe even a tad over 6 is fine, but I woulnt reccomend anything over 6.5, unless it was designed to hold that capacity.
