Default Just how F'd am I

Ok so doing a head/cam was finishing up installing my new double roller timing chain. when I tried to put the cam sprocket on it pushed the cam back, no biggy figured I would do it a couple times till i had the alignment perfect with the cam dowel, anyways I started to thread a cam sprocket bolt in but it slipped and dropped into my oil pan lets just say I am not exactly happy right now.

Any pices of advise on how to retrieve the bolt, other than dropping the entire pan somehow since I am doing this by myself in a carport. damnit things were going soo well. Ithink I will try to pick up a magnetic tool picker today after class and try that through the oil drain plpug.

Give me some ideas or just tell me how dumb I am that works too

you might be able to get it through the oil drain plug, or maybe through the open front cover. It depends if it managed to get past the baffle. good luck with it.

I would try a flexible-rod with a magnet on the end... Pull the drain plug and fish around in there for it.

Try the magnet or they make a thing that I'm not sure what it's called, it's a pretty long flexible hose with a plunger that you pull with your fingers that closes a 3-arm claw. Depending on how big the claw is, it might help. Good luck.

Too bad you don't have a snake cam like the special operations guys have. LOL You could weasel that thing into the pan and see where it is exactly and grab it with those claw things with the flexible line.

Fishing around w/a magnet is probably your best bet.You might try jacking the *** end of the car up to roll the bolt forward in the pan.Bore scopes are in the 20k range(ours is anyway) and"mechanical fingers" you kinda' have to see what your going after.$.02

well guys I guess I freaked out a little. I went back out after class and put the car back up in the air about 2 feet got underneath at oil-pan-level and was able to see that little bastard the new flexible magnet tool I got worked wonders. I also have one of the 3-claw tools but its at my parents house( 4 hours away does no good) thanks for all the support project new car back on track. Got the whole double roller timing chain on along with the oil pump, and now I need to finish cleaning the passenger side head bolt holes. then it reassembly. well at least for the motor. next thing will be the fuel pump then the new 9" that should be here soon. and then UMI suspension and finally I will need to finish my fab of my custom true dual. wow I have a long way to go. But man is this **** fun, I may rethink becoming an engineer.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. A new day and a clear head can do wonders sometimes.

Been a number of times where I just have to call it a day or take a break to get away and clear my head for a bit. Things seem to go much smoother after that.

Good thread, lesson learned: stuff some rags in the pan opening so nothing falls in there.

Exactly, get the rod thats has the gripper at the end and put a heavy magnet on it, since its aluminum, you shouldnt be able to grab anything other then the crank, or the item that dropped.
