Default Valvetrain Inspection?..

Ok my valvetrain seems to be getting more noisy...I am suppose to go to the track Sat. and I want to maybe take a peek under the covers and at least see if anything is out of whack up there. ( I cant get to the lifters obviously). What should I be looking for?...Should I expect ANY up down slack of the pushrods?...Side to side movement of the rockers?...Basically my car starts to tick a little...and go away.....come back....rattle rattle...if I barely blip the throttle open from under the hood...I mean barely just for a second...I can get a clatter as it settles back to idle. As I drive...as it sweeps up past 2100-2500 slowly you can hear a soft jackhammer effect..but its gone above 2500. It still sees 6,000 and doesnt spit parts out..YET. Any advice?...

exhaust leak? i thought i had problems just like yours, turns out a nut fell off one of my flanges and i had a small leak. sounded just like a ticking rocker arm.

pull the valve covers, pull the rockers and check that the pushrods arent bent. Also check for a exhaust leak like he said, it can definitely sound like valvetrain noise

+1

It wont take long and you'll have a good idea what is going on.

Also make sure the rockers are torqued to 22ft.lbs. when you put them back on.

Rocker arms appear in good condition. They have only the slightest side to side movement at the trunion. The pushrods do not appear to be bent. So what does this mean?...I NEED lifters?...Or maybe just that there is some slack in the pushrods? I am doing a cam swap soon, but man I was hoping to leave the heads on and lifters alone. What do you guys think I should do?
