Getting MS3 Cam...Is it a necessity to change the intake? a few other ?'s too
Hey guys,
I am planning on getting a TSP MS3 cam (complete kit with springs, rods, retainers, ect) To put on my 98 Z28. I need a few opinions:
1) Should I change my gears to better suit the cam? Is there a big difference between 3.90's and 4.10's? I am leaning towards the 4.10's
2) Does the intake NEED to be changed? I have 2g's to spend total on everything including install.....I don't think I'd have enough for cam, gears, and intake installed.....so..............whats more important. Gears or intake?
3) any other supporting mods you can think of besides a tune? The car currently has Kooks longtubes, catted Y, SLP catback, Lid, LS7 clutch and LS2 Flywheel.
I think the car is going to stay cam only also,
Thanks in advance for advice

you can get by with stock intake and the gears you have if your strapped for cash, stick the cam in now, it'll drive ok but not optimum. But if you wanted to spend all two G's I'd do the gears before intake for sure and there's not much diiference between 3:90's and 4:10's.

If you don't have supporting mods for a big cam....be prepared to lose to smaller cams. If you don't want to/or have the money for the supporting mods.....go for a smaller cam. On a manual w/o gears with a big cam will be sluggish out of the hole compared to a smaller cammed car. And on the other side....if you don't have the intake/tb/exhaust mods to help the car breathe....your not letting the cam work to it's full potential. So, without your gears and intake/tb.....you're pretty much choking a big cam on either end.

I would upgrade the intake to an LS6 with a new throttle body or a ported and polished piece along with a new set of injectors. You can also upgrade the fuel pump with a walbro 255 and upgrade the fuel rails with a set from Speed Inc. The rails from speed inc. are a direct replacement. I don't think its gonna matter if you go with the 3.90's or 4.10's. After that stuff, I would then get a new cam.

Well guys...I pulled the trigger.....However I went with the Torquer V3 Cam kit. Also got the LS2 timing set, 4.10 gear package, and LS6 intake. I might just have to wait a bit to install it. After speaking with Brian at TSP....He said this would be a more streetable cam and make nicer low end power, more suited to my wants....MS3 doesn't make all potential power till 4800
anyways
Heard some sound clips and it sounds badass...Makes good #'s too!

I would say intake and gears first... then cam. To be able to support the internal modifications, you have to have the right externals so the cam can doe it's job.

....here is the rundown
TSP torquer V3 Cam (231/234 .643"/.598" 111 LSA)
PRC Valvetrain kit
LS2 timing chain
LS6 intake
Kooks longtubes,CATTED Y, SLP catback
UD pulley
Lid
DYNO tune
4.10 gears
That is all. The car has 82K on it with a LS7 clutch and LS2 flywheel. I had TTP in Toms river NJ Dyno the car. The following #'s are WC (weather corrected)
419 RWHP
372 RWTQ
I couldn't believe my eyes....Once I drove the car, it was all so clear how badass it is The tune came out phenomonal. No surging, nice idle...feels awesome. It pulls like a freight train from just over 3 grand all the way to 6500. To anyone looking for a CAM...This is a awesome one, sounds amazing too! Just get yourself a good tune.
I'd like to thank Tom from Anger Management Racing for his awesome work...anyone in NJ looking for a top notch mechanic..he is the man to go to!

Congrats on the numbers! And just for the record,... I'll go against the grain of everyone else,....MY car ran just fine on 2.73 gears/4000 stall/MS3 cam AND LS1 Intake, so what im getting at is that the car will run and drive just fine and dandy although you will not be at optimum performance levels like someone else noted.
Oh and also,...i'm STILL on completely stock fueling system, runnin 11.7's cam only and the injectors are not at 100% duty cycle either

For what its worth My first fbody was a 98 w/obx lts magnaflow C/B lid, and 3600 converter w/ 2.73s and 275/45/17 M/T d/rs best 1/4m was 7.99
Also no need to upgrade Inj in a 98 it already has 28.8s

Good choice on the Tqr 3 I'm running a custom grind that is similar to the torquer cam in specs and I'm very happy that I stayed in that range instead of going any bigger. I have my dyno sheet posted in the dyno section if you would like to take a look. Good luck with your build.
