How's it so economical?
ok so its no 4 cylinder diesel.. but really for a large displacement, powerful torquey engine the LS's are very frugal.
How has this come about? why arent fuel injected 350 or 383 chevs still in the same league? is it the multi coil sparks more spark, more compression? these are things you can do to a chev too and still not the see the economy of an LS motor.. so where does all the efficiency come from?

15 degree cylinder head design, roller cam profiles, more compression + better fuel control
smart electrics etc all adds up to todays i guess!.conversely years back i ordered some beaut edelbrock alloy street heads ported em more back +from the flowbench,+ they flowed 560bhp.nowadays you get a factory head just a quicky tidy up,flows every bit as good if not better as them heads i spent weeks on!
its like a stock lx1 come factory equipped with street versions of edelbrock/afr heads of old, good performer manifold, holley carb or projection tbi + emission legal street roller cam.

A lot of EFI tricks now that weren't available back then. Dynamic fuel cutoff, precision injection, closed loop O2 operation and MAF usage. Not to mention all the hardware design changes mentioned above. Each adds up pretty quickly.
