Default Oil Pressure Question With Heads And Cam ??

I have a 98 six speed ls1 with heads and cam , my mods are stage two patriot heads, jessel rockers,ls6 intake the cam is a comp cams 230/234 .591/.598 lift on a 114 lsa., ported tb, and mahle coated pistons with arp rod bolts and a tsp oil pump. just had the engine rebuilt about 2500 miles ago and my oil pressure is like 60 psi cold and like 45-50 psi running hot, but a few days ago my pressure gauge has been has been like at 60 psi but the needel shakes a bit then when my car gets hot it goes to like 45 to 40 psi sometimes a little lower and the guage is jumpy. i dont like the fluctuating cause in the past before the rebuild my pressure was real shitty and would fluctuate below 20 psi and i would develope a lifter tick which i hated. so i did an complete overhaul with new bearings and everything and when the car came outa the shop the pressure gauge was steady above 40 so now im getting scared... is there any way my cam bearings could be going bad again or what could it be. I run 10w 40 castrol oil. Any one help??? post up

i have ported 243 heads and a 224 cam and my pressure is about 40psi hot when the car is running at 180-190* and when the car heats up (if the ac is on and im in traffic) to about 200-210* is drops to about 30-35psi. i have been watching my aftermarket gauges so i know thats why my pressure is dropping. the oil is heating up and thinning out so the pressure is dropping a little...

maybe thats your issue too...

mine stays the same once it heats up but i agree with the thinning oil theory, you might want to check the gauge and the sending unit

Verify your pressure with aftermarket gauge and sender.. I wouldn't trust the Stock OEM one..

Could have a failing sending unit?

The cam bearing could have gotten nicked/scraped while the cam was being installed..?

Only other thing I can think of right now is a failing or sticking bypass valve/spring in the oil pump...

I have heard that worn out main bearings is usually the cause of this. Which i hope isnt the case because i am having the same problem. My oil pressure when hot at idle will go to 40 psi then start to fall off a little then come back and go back down. So any info you get will help me lol sorry.

well, it is normal for oil pressure to go down a little bit when it heats up (what i experiance) but it seems like you all have other issues. But if it drops like 10psi from cold to hot, i wouldnt worry. the needle jumping could be a bad sending unit...
