Default Leak down test results

Tested at 90 psi incoming. Cylinders 1-8 excluding 7 read between 55-60 psi. Cylinder 7 of course reads 10. So we are looking at 30%+ of leakage. I am taking the motor out because of horrible blow by problems. This is a rebuild that is only 3K miles old. Feedback on the leakdown? They file fit Akerly Childs rings and feel like it wasnt done right. Tomorrow I am going by the machine shop to report my findings.

I have Ackerly and Childs rings on my new motor. The shortblock was machined and assembled by a shop in Austin, but Erik Koenig assembled the entire engine (top-end and all) in Houston. Upon inspection, he noticed that the number 8 cylinder had a broken oil control ring. He said the Ackerly and Childs rings are strong, but very brittle and are very susceptible to snapping. My bet is that this is what happened to your engine too. The ring was probably broken during assembly (like mine). It's more common than you would think. The motor will make power, but it will have oil control problems and lots of blow by. Sound familiar?

I appreciate that Patrick, thats an angle I wasnt considering. What about the percentage of leakdown though? 30%, that cant be considered tolerable, is it? Reason I ask, the more ammo I have, the better the case when I go to them and negotiate who pays for what. I am of course gunning for them doing all the machining and assembly for no charge. Also, what other rings are you guys liking that are durable and hate to say it "installer friendly". This next set of rings is going into a set of diamond pistons.

While a 30% leakdown is a lot, it will affect oil consumption more than it will decrease power. I've seen some motors with 30% leakdown on 1 cylinder only be down 10-20 rwhp, but they might smoke a lot. Had Erik not found the broken ring before the motor was installed, we would have run the engine as is and wondered why blow by was bad and why the motor didn't make its full power.

For a power adder motor, the Ackerly and Childs rings are supposed to be very tough, similar to a Hellfire ring. But they can easily snap in two upon install if you're not careful.

Thanks again. 30% on one cylinder might be alot, how about on 7? LOL. I am going forward with the stance that they didnt set it up right from the word go. The car did make decent power, 445/408. To be honest though, I know for what it has going on, it should be more like 475/425.
