Default Rust on cyl walls...

Ok, I just bought a 00 take out engine thats been sitting for a very long time. When I pulled the heads off I inspected the gaskets and saw no breaches in the gasket. However it seems that the engine had been sitting so long rust formed on the cyl walls..almost like it was caked on. I couldnt get it off with my finger and it seemed pretty imbedded on there. Well the other day I hit it with a can of brake cleaner and then some WD40 and the rust literally dissapeared and left absolutely nothing on the cyl walls. Do you think ill be ok to run this motor now? I coated every cyl and piston with WD40 also to prevent further corrosion since its got no heads on it.

Is the engine taken apart? I'm guessing if it's still assembled you didn't get completely get to every part. You could hit it with a honing brush real lightly if it's in pieces.

No,I only removed the heads. I also removed the oil pan and looked at the crank and rods and they looked fine. I turned the crank over to look at every cyl wall and continued lubricating with WD40 until every one was covered. Now I do it once a week to keep moisture out...the heads have been off for about 3 weeks. You think id be ok just putting heads back on it and running it like that?

sounds just like some surface rust, shouldn't be an issue

sounds like surface rust, as long as theres no pitting then in theory you should be ok. you'd have to do a compression test to be sure

I should be able to see pitting correct? I can see a slight discoloration..but i can still see the cross hatch through it as well..

If you're really paranoid about it, take it to a machine shop and get new rings and bearings. Shouldn't cost much at all.

It will be a non issue but since the motor is out, this is the time to do things like bearing and rings and also ARP rod bolts.

Well ill eventually be upgrading to new pistons/rod bolts but I just want to get the car up and running instead of having to worry about breaking in a car and a motor at the same time.
