Examine each chain tooth closely(load side). Do any show signs of an indentation on the load side where the where the chain link PIN presses against the tooth? This would be the place to look for the first signs of wear. It doesn't appear to be worn from the photo, but you be the judge by examining it visually. You can also look at each tooth on their front and rear faces to be sure the chain link plates aren't riding too snugly against either face. Forget those little scratches. The scratches are anywhere near where the work is taking place.

Mine had small cracks in it so I replaced it. The new one from the dealer is a little different, LS2/7 style I guess. It is solid, no holes like the ls1 style. It also has some oil 'slots' on the side that faces the retainer plate. If I was you I would get the new cam retainer plate as well. It comes with a new lifter oil galley gasket in it. If you get the retainer plate make sure you get the newer bolts to go with it, slightly larger bolt head to match the plate.
