cam install with a peckin noise
Just got done with a cam and head swap. all new lifters, oil pump and the whole nine yards on the heads to get them ready for the cam. The car runs fine until it warms up and i get a peakin noise. the oil pressure sometimes goesdown to 20 but ridin down the road and while cool the car runs b/w 35 and 40 like it should. I had 7.4's in it and heard that the xer lobs made alot of valvetrain noise so i changed the pushrod to the 7.425 to see if that was it but of coarse its not. Have been told it could be the oring on the pickup tube being torn. any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Well we tore the front off the motor and got back down to the oil pump. I pulled the o-ring and took a few pics. It is not torn but it is out of shape. Hopefully this was the problem. Check these pics and tell me if you think this would cause this problem we are having.
The overall shape of the 0-ring is not circular anymore either. It is kind of squared on the edges.
Opinions please.

Quick question for you guys. Is the O-ring supposed to set on top of the flange on the pick up tube or does it go down around the edge of the flange. I have it setting on top of the flange and the oil pan and timing chain cover is bolted back up. I just want to be sure before I go all the way back together.

On top of the flange is correct like you currently have it. Use oil on the "O" ring, tube and oil pump input port. Just be sure you're careful as you insert the pickup tube into the pump port so as not to pinch the "O" ring and to get the tube seated fully home before you begin to tighten the flange bolt. This will reduce the chance you'll have oil pressure problems.

did it quiet it down a lot? I am pretty sure my car is making the exact same noise. On the way home last week it actually got worse though. It has made the same noise you had for a while but when the car is at idle when its hot it has a random tick that is louder than that. I ordered new lifters b/c that is what i thought it was but now after reading this i might try the o-ring first. It would sure be cheaper and quicker than lifters! Could you get another video of after the o-ring change? Thanks!

It may be 2 years gone by but it was fixed and it was the o-ring. My son drives the car everyday. We were getting very low oil pressure and it was fluctuating quite a bit. Seems like it was between 10-25 PSI at idle. We bought a new o-ring from GM and installed it. That ended the fluctuating and when the old o-ring was compared to the new one you could see that the old one was deformed. That probably happened when we installed the new oil pump. It is very hard to get the oil pump pickup tube seated if you are not paying close attention.
I would say if you have worked on the oil pump that would probably be the problem. If you have done lifters you might want to check the rocker arms again and make sure they are still torqued to spec. If all is good there, visually check each rocker and watch each rocker pivot. You may have the bearings in one of the rockers.
Be sure to let us know what you find.
