Default GMPP Cams

Just read in the Feb Hot Rod mag.. that there are two other cams that GM has release or has been released, the part numbers are listed along with the HOT Cam..

I looked them up and found info on the SDPC site.. "Specifically released as a cam upgrade for the LS7 engine, these cams will work with all LS style engines --- nasty sound and big torque."

Hot Cam #88958733

Stage 2 #88958722
Advertised Duration (I/E) 290/305
Duration @ 0.050 227/239
LSA 108
Lift (w/1.7) 0.551/0.551
Lift (w/1.8) 0.583/0.583
LS7 engine-dyno with the "Stage 2" cam results show;
554hp at 6200rpm – plus 35hp over the stock LS7 cam
508ft-lbs @ 4800rpm – over 440ft-lbs of torque from 3200 to 6500rpm’s

Stage 3 #88958723
Advertised Duration (I/E) 294/335
Durartion @ 0.050’ 233/276
LSA 107
Lift (w/1.7) 0.595/0.595
Lift (w/1.8) 0.630/0.630
LS7 engine-dyno results with "Stage 3" cam show;
600hp @ 6800rpm
526ft-lbs @ 4900rpm – over 450ft-lbs from 3200 to 6800rpm’s

What do you CAM experts think ?.. or have any of you guys tryed these yet.. what other mod do you think will be need to run them on LS1/LS6 engines. Intake, headers, heads..etc..? how will then be on CAM only cars ? (maybe LS6 intake and headers?).

I actually just looked at both of those cams in the new GMPP catalog. I wish they would release some more technical information for the Hot Cam, but overall I think the 2 new cams look good. I'm anxious to see someone run the stage 3 in their car

233/276 ????????

That seems like a really weird combo for a cam.
Wouldnt you almost need to go solid roller to unlock its full performance?

My personal feeling is that is a HUGE split. But on a carb combination with a good intake port I hear it works. There is another thread where some of the road racing guys have used this cam and like it.

Untill I get a chance to test it in a carbed L92 or LS7 I think that I will have to rely on what others who have used the cam tell me.

I have heard it's like a light switch at 4500 rpm

Robin,

I am intested in the stage 2 cam for a CAM only (LS6 Intake, Ported Throttle body and Headers) in a LS1.

With the smaller lift.. do you think the LS6 spring work ? (or the comps 918's).

Any opinons..?

^^The 918's break. You might want to think about that. You can get the Patriots for about the same price. Cheap insurance and peace of mind IMO.

Sorry.. I should have stated that the Spring requirement for the amount of lift would be in the range of the LS6 or 918 specs...

I really like that cam.......for a carb application. It has a lobe sep of 108 which in my opinion is too narrow for a log runner efi type manifold. I would look for somthing with a little wider lobe sep. The GMPP ASA cam is better with a 110. For a driver a 112 would have less overlap with that duration.

I looked at the Lunati and PAC springs at PRI. Anyone can have a bad run of springs. Comp makes some good products and I would not be afraid to run the 918 since they have addressed the problem.

The GMPP LS6/LS3 Spring is a decent spring. I like more on the seat than most people. That spring is good to .570 lift so I would probably shim it up a little with the short lift cams.

I'll be doing an article on valvetrain components for the LS engines in the next few months.

I personally fatigue test every new batch, which greatly reduces the chance of a bad one slipping through.

You're right that everyone has a bad run every now and then. We just make sure that they don't get out of QC

not to dig something up from the deep deep dead, but has anyone had any experience with the new LS Stage x cams? I'm just curious if anyone has used them in a cam only instance and what gains and where are they seeing them. The GMPP cams are good for the daily driver, I liked the hot cam in my truck. Good power without having to go huge lift and stiff springs.
