Default '03 Z06 heads: Any real benefit over stock '02 LS1 heads??

A local shop is selling a set of box stock '03 Z06 heads w/ 22k miles on them. I just picked up an '02 Z28 last week and I will eventually be doing a cam & full bolt-ons. If I can get these heads cheap, should I? Any idea what of gain I would see with these heads mated to a mild cam, something similair to the old school Thunder 224 cam? If its just ~ 5 rwhp I'll skip it, but if its closer to 20 rwhp then for the money I think it makes sense. Thoughts??

Yep, the LS6 heads are a great choice...especially if you can get them ported.

proven to do around 15 hp+ over the 241's on your car now, just a side note Patriot sells them new for $450 so if they want anywhere close to that skip them... Also you might want to check into PRC heads from TSP for under a 1k you can get ported ls6 heads...

u can get some more power out of them using a thinner gasket for tighter quence and milling them for more compression.

If u run them with a .040 gasket and get a good valvejob done to them along with the TR224 I would expect the heads alone to be worth 20RW....The cam will add another 30RW...

You gotta consider how big a cam you want run. If you have to change springs and pushrods etc.. then your better goin with a ported aftermarket set up. TSP has new ported 5.3 heads with dual springs good to 650 lift and titanium retainers SS valves, blah blah blah for $1200 something. Hard to beat!! You'll be in the same ballpark after parts if you can do the work to to those ls6 heads yourself. TSP will also mill them to your specs and or recess the valves for a bigger cam at no charge (if I am not mistaken). Unreal what you can get for the money compared to just a few years ago.
