Follow the guide posted above and you're pretty much good. Plan to take a LOT of time if this is your first time. Don't say "I've got 3 hours, I should be able to get this, that and this done." You'll end up only getting the first thing done. LOL. Definitely use ziploc bags for bolts and mark each bag with a Sharpie on where they go. Take a bunch of pics as you go so you can go back and look as see how something was oriented. Sucking the coolant out of the block before you pull the heads will save you a bunch of time cleaning out the bolt holes. Good luck.

hey thanks a lot guys i have been taking pics as i go i started the tear down today im almost ready to start rebuilding i need to take the left head off still and the front cover/cam and lifters. quick question though what intake/tb should i put on?

i like the ls6 intake manifold due to pricing and its performance with regards to other competitive intake manifolds. there are different TB's, but even a ported stock one is quite nice. did you manage to not break the oil pressure sensor in the back of the block when you took the intake off? i know oodles of ppl that have done that, includin myself.

Get a first aid kit. Lots of blood, sweat and words getting those coil packs off. Use a 1/4" ratchet set for them. I put my car up 2 feet and used a good stool to stand on for top work. Use a shop vac on the water pump. Then when the pump is off shop vac the water passages on both heads. If you do it well, not one drop of coolant will spill into the cylinders or bolt holes. Still, use compressed air through a small tube to clean ALL debris and liquid from the holes - critical. Drill a couple of 1/4" holes in your thermostat blade so you don't get an airlock when refilling the system.
Very hardest part was removal and installation of the wiring behind the heads.

well i don't think i broke the oil press sensor? but its possible i suppose but yea i hear you on the blood sweat and words luckily its been cold out and it keeps me at a moderate temp! will it mess up my thermostat? should i just through a new one? in as for the coil packs i left them on the valve covers and just took the whole assembly off! made it a lot easier and less work. which intake provides the best gains im wanting to be able to rev up to about 7200 rpm

since you're doing h/c, just throw a 90/90 setup on there. No point in getting something cheap and upgrading again later. If you've got the stock Tstat, replace that guy with a 180, or 160.

I used the green pads like you would use to scrub pots, but not the woven-metal brillo things. The green ones. You can find them at any grocery store for like a couple dollars for 20. And i def used ALL 20! That brakleen eats them up!

well i have the 1998 ls1 in the TA and for 98 and 98 only they made the valve covers attach with parimeter bolts instead of the common center bolt design which i now have to find some new valve covers cause i have the newer model heads and now my covers will not fit
