motor swap cost
Hey guys,
I was curious to find out what would be a reasonable price to charge my friend to take out a broken LS1 motor in a 98 z28, also taking out a good LS1 motor out of his 01 SS and putting the good motor in the Z28? Thanks
Chris

Well, just to install my new motor in 2005 it took my friends and I 16 hours. That was hooking everything up, taking some breaks, running to the store to get crap. Taking the motor out the top in 2004 took us about 2 hours. I probably had 4 hours into that beforehand to remove the intake, heads etc. all the stuff that gets in the way when removing everything. That time also included labeling everything by putting bolts etc. in plastic bags with notes (knowing I may not put it back together for 6 months).
So if you have 20 hours into the swaps, how much do you feel your time is worth per hour?
Granted 20 night be high to some but is probably not unreasonable. I assume they will be helping and perhaps you have done this before? (remove and install). Maybe you want to go out the bottom on the cars involved. Some claim it saves time. I ask about the friends help because you really need 2 people for some portions of the job.
Again, how much is your time worth?

Well I was close, $1700 / $75 per hour is 22 hours. Assuming $75 is what most shops charge. And I agree with the friend deal, free or trade on some future help. I had 2 friends help me with mine for free; more a learning experience for all involved. I then helped him install heads/cam in 2006 for free.

Hes a friend but I cant do it for free. Maybe 1500 for both removals and install of the good motor. ? The bad motor already has the heads and **** off so that wont be hard. They probably wont be helping.....Not to mechanically inclined. Thanks guys
