Using Diesel Engine oil??
Hey Guys.
Just a curiosity question.
I get can get Castrol Tection Extra 15w-40 (its a synthetic blend)from work for free all day long.
I mean we run our trucks 36k miles w/ out an oil change. I know the oil won't hurt the engine, but any pros/cons to running the thicker oil?
BTW..the engine has 103K miles, and may throw a set of rod/main bearings in it while its out

Thats a good question. At my last job at Budweiser all we had was 15w40 cause a majority of vehicals were big trucks. Theres been times i've toped a lil pickups off with the stuff cause its better than no oil. All the other small engines we ran it in and never blew anything up eg. golfcarts, Rhinos, lawnmower engines ect. Maybe a little worse gas milage if that?Goodluck

Most oils now a day are usable in gas and diesel motors. 15 / 40 does not mean its a diesel strict oil unless it says "for diesel engines" if it does say that, I wouldn't use it as it's most likely a monograde oil which means its viscosity only protects against high or low temperatures and not both, which is required for gas motors.
