Default What is the maximum amount you can safely flycut?

I was wondering what the maximum amount you can flycut on a stock piston is? The reason I am asking is because I was told by TSP to take .100" out for my H/C setup and go from there. If I need to go more how much is too much for the stock pistons?

Thanks

from what I have read the piston top is .250 in the thin area's. I believe that .100 is the max but there are people running more at their discretion. There is a great sticky on flycutting that I read all of this in.

Its actually pretty thick in that area. By the wristpin to be exact.

Ive cut .130 on my personal car, and it had about 60k~ miles on it with no problems.

Typical cut on our stuff depends, but is ~ 60-80 thou.

I am having my stock LY6 pistons(08 6.0L with L92's milled .045) cut .120 for the intake valve to clear my MS4 advanced 4*. I think its still going to be a little tight, but its better the original .037 clearance I had with the heads not even milled at all. I have to mill the heads to get some compression, and I had to advance the cam 4*, so it will make my LSA tighter. Reason being I am going to a carb style intake with a elbow and TB on the end. Me and the engine builder dont want to turn the stock bottom end with ARP pro's 7800. So we advanced the cam and all that to bring it down.

They also profiled my cam while it was there, specs were close from what TSP says, but he said that cam has the lobes that would make running a hyd roller lifter and 440 lbs open spring pressire, rough. I think they were called XFI lobes on the intake, and extreme energy on the exhaust side. He wanted me to run solid roller lifters on the MS4, but with the spring pocket being so small, I cant get a big enough spring in there to run the heavy Harland Sharp L92 rocker arms. I am looking into finding a setup to run solid roller setup with stock rockers... and maybe cutting the spring pocket to get a better spring in there, but thats after this motor lets go.... I mean its only a stock bottom end.

Did you run the car with the .037 or was that just what you checked it to be during mock up?

I actually decided not to flycut. Rather I am going forged internals and spray. Should be fun!
