Default Dart 225 heads...now what valves???

I am picking up a set of unassembled Dart 225's...I'm curious what valves some of you guys are using to dress your heads. I have everything else but havent desided on the valves. I have my cam (vinci 222/228 .551/.551) and crane 1.8 rockers so lift is not going to be crazy but I am planning for the LM Speed Maggie kit. Power output range is between 525-540 horse. Sooo yeah what are your opinions on the VALVES?

I have Dart 225's, the same cam, and rockers. I would recommend the stock Dart valves. They are the equivalent of a Manley Severe Duty valve and are very high quality. I don't know what they cost, but I'm sure they are competitively priced with other valves of comparable quality.

I haven't finished up the tune or dynoed it yet. I'm waiting on a few parts to finish up my fuel system so I can install a Tony Mamo ported FAST90/90. Once all of that is on, I'll post numbers.

As an FYI, you will most likely have to flycut the intake side for this to clear. I'm using the same combination you will be. I flat milled the heads .022 and used a Fel-Pro 1161L and 1161R head gasket (4.100 bore, .053 thick) and had .056" PTV clearance on the intake side and .101 PTV clearance on the exhaust side.

My pistons were .008 above the deck, so my SCR with the above combo is 11.31. The DCR, which I don't put much stock in, is 8.27.

What springs are you using?

The valve spring seats on these heads require a .562 ID which is different from most other heads. Make sure you specify the correct spring seats for the springs you will be using.

For head gaskets, make sure you use one with the correct bore diameter. These heads have a 3.970 chamber width, so you will need a gasket with a minimum bore size of 4.00 inches. Dart recommended to me either the GM 6.0L MLS or Fel-Pro 1161 head gaskets.

I just realized I forgot to add the spring info for ya...They are Crane duals. I'll have to measure them out before hand. I still have some time before I finalize head gaskets and what not so I have time to deside. Alot of FI guys run the 6.0 MLS so thats the direction I am probably going.

I installed Crane 144833's on my Dart 225's. The spring locator that comes with the Crane kit will not work on these heads. You can get the correct spring locators from Dart or Futral Motorsports. They were way cheaper and easier to get from Futral over the Dart locators.

Which Crane spring are you using?

Here's the information on the spring locators for dual springs on the Dart heads:

Dart part # 2320051 or Futral Motorsports FMS-3988
Specs:
OD: 1.240
ID: .565
Spring ID: .650
Thickness: .060

As far as springs go, I would install the 144832's at 1.750 installed height. Here is the installed height I got using the Dart valves and the following components:

Crane 144661-16 retainers, Crane 99107-1 keepers, Futral MS FMS-3988 Locators: 1.775 Installed Height

Here's what the 832's will work out to be installed at 1.750:

So you will probably need approximately .025 in shims to get to 1.750 installed height. For shims, I used Isky Micro Shim Kit #6. Here's what it comes with:

Hmm I will have to measure the spacers I have and see what I come up with. I guess you had a lot of leg work before your install. You are saving much needed time.

Do you need to do any work on these or just run them out of the box. I have mine off and thought that if I was to do anythingnow would be the time.

I'm not sure where you got the above information. The Crane 144832's have the following lift capability:

1.045 - Coil bind height
.060 - minimum clearance required before coil bind
+_______
1.105 - Subtotal

1.750 Installed height
1.105 - subtotal from above
-_________
.645 maximum lift

Some say the Darts leave something to be desired out of the box. However, they do respond very well to porting and if you have the time/money it would be worth it.

.695 lift would be maximum lift at 1.8" installed height; however, I wouldn't use the 144832 spring for Comp XER lobes. If you want to stay with Crane springs, the 144833 is the spring I would recommend. The PSI 1511 is also a great spring if you don't mind a single beehive.
