Default ported oil pump and clean pistons

1st who here has ported there oil pump? What's involved? I have the pistons out of my ls1 and would like to know what you all would use to clean the carbon off the top. thx

no ported pump for me but i would use gasket remover spray and wire brush to clean pistons, just be carefull with ring grooves. Permatex makes remover, or you can use top engine cleaner or throttle body cleaner. BTW you could have cleaned them with out dissassembling engine.

To clean the piston tops, get one of those single edged razor blades that slide into the end of those metal holders. They sell them at all hardware stores.

The piston will stick out of the bore slightly when it's at TDC. Scraping with the blade will take every bit of carbon off the piston top very quickly. Won't hurt anything. Worked perfect on my engine.

Just re-read your post....

Why do you have the pistons out of the engine?
To rebuild it. It spun a bearing.
