Advancing the '02^ LS6 cam
Has anyone ever tried to advance an LS6 cam to pick up some low end? I've got an LS6 ('03) engine in my 2001 Z-28 with an STS kit on the way. I picked up a new Cloyes timing set on e-bay for $17 and I picked up a pair of 317's from a member here, so I'll be ripping everything down. The general consensus that I've gotten is that the LS6 cam should work real well. My only arguement is that the power band with that cam seems to start a bit late. Does anyone think advancing the cam timing 2*-4* will wake up the bottom end a bit or should I leave it straight up? Thanks!

Advanced retard-ment
Hi,
I have run this cam advanced 4 degrees, retarded 2 degrees & straight up. There is a small change in the feel of the power band but it is not dramatic. The advanced position does take away some of the 3500 rpm bump up in torque and seems to flatten things out a bit. One of the issues with advancing this cam is that the exhaust valve opens fairly early so advancing the cam opens the exhaust even earlier and you loose some of the expected low end torque from this effect. On a stock gearing C5, I like the advanced position better for a street can. For a C5 with 4.10 gears, I like the retarded position better as the engine revs so fast.
Good luck,
Steve

Thanks for the input so far guys!
2000Hawk, I'm trying to avoid the extra $400 or so for a custom grind if I can tweak a proven cam like the LS6 a little to better suit my needs.
SNW VETTE, thanks for the insight from your experience!
The LS6 is actually in my 2001 Z-28, not a Vette. I failed to mention the application in my post. The car weighs around 3700 lbs. The coming mods are 3.42 gears (12 bolt), 4L80E w/3000 stall, pulley, ptb, STS w/GT67 upgrade, FMIC, meth, 317's w/ PRC spring and Crane Gold rockers (1.7). The LS6 cam is a proven performer for FI, but since I'll have the top end apart I figured I could advance the cam a bit to better suit my needs when not under boost. As far as the car's performance n/a, the mods and times are in my sig. Thanks again!
