Default Cam suggestion for stock 6 speed?

Hi,
Can you guys recommend a cam for my 2000 SS, which has no mods for hp, just suspension stuff so far, except for:

LG lid & Holley filter
SLP Loudmouth exhaust

The car is a 6 speed and has done 65,000 miles.

Thanks,

Nice response, 00clscamaro

Well, there are so many combinations out there. You need to determine what your goals are for adding the cam. Slight improvement in horsepower, but still daily driver? All out power, super lopey cam that shakes your car, house, and fillings? Or something in between. Search is your friend, as are the stickies at the top of this section. Good luck.

I bolded the most important part of this response.

To the OP - reveiw that part, and check back in. Search may help a lot too, as cam questions are pretty popular. Good luck.

LOL, what a douchebag comment.

First you need to decide what you want to do with the car. Is it a daily driver? weekend warrior?? full time track car?? all this will be important when deciding on a combo.

And no, getting a cam at this point is not a waste of time. You'll just not see it's full potiential until you have supporting mods. But you have to watch out. There is alot of hype & BS out there. Always remember when choosing a cam for your particular goals, bigger is not always better depending on your planned use for the car. And don't fall into the dyno number race. I have seen cars w/lower dyno numbers ET the **** outta higher dyno hp cars.

Agreed. I would get a few boltons before the cam. i.e. headers, ls6 intake, heads,

UK camaro, yu are in euroland as am i, and the low dollar is your friend right now... if i weer you id call up one of the vendors, texas speed ad performance is a good bet, and get a heads cam package, somthing like the stage2.5 5.3L head with a 224/224 cam and the headers and supporting mods, (lid, UD pullies etc) in the same shipment.. then take he car off the road and install the whole package, have it tuned at a pro dyno shop.. you will propably call arround to see if anyone will mess with it...

i found out ill have to buy a tuner my self and bring to the Dynoguy, as he didnt have any camaro compatible OBDII editors....

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I had a feeling one suggestion might be to get other stuff first, but as shipping and import tax to europe is pretty expensive (doubles the cost actually paid for the item in the US), I was hoping the cam would be a good strating point, but I'll rethink this view and perhaps as the exchange rate is good from here right now, perhaps adding some other stuff in at the same time, would be the best way to go.

I use the car (mainly) as a daily driver, however at $2.11 per liter or fuel, it's use for daily duties is diminishing, and may be heading towards a track day only car!

The car is set up for european roads as far as the handling is concerned - and I want the power to be set up for similiar. The sort of thing I want from the cam would be a slight increase in hp, a higher rev range, stock like driveability....

I'll keep looking around here and will probably contact some of the vendors and see what they suggest.

Thanks again,

talk to patrick G and have hime spec out a cam with your stock headers.

You can always get a cam similar to a ls6 cam. You can proabably pick up a good 20-30 rwhp from a small cam swap.

Since when are heads a bolton? LOL, this is not necessarily true. If you want a sleeper, then stock manifolds will muffle it. Would suggest something in the 222/224 range, with a 114-115 lsa.

However, because you have the Loudmouth, then I would imagine that you are not trying to build a sleeper but merely haven't invested in a good set of headers yet.

You can probably achieve this with merely an intake/headers, and a GOOD tune. If you want to throw a cam in there then consider a small-moderate cam. For the twisties (i.e. curvy roads), you will want to have a reasonable amount of low end torque. With big cams, the car only pulls (performs well) in the upper RPM range. This is not good for road racing.

If you would like a cam while keeping your stock exhaust here is what I suggest:
214/230 .600/.592 115+1 LSA
That will add 20>25 rwhp tuned

Next I would do LS6 intake and ported TB
there is a stealth combo that wil give you a healthy 40rwhp +

There are plenty of off the shelf grinds that work with a basically stock motor. Some people be it dickish are kinda right as if to do all that work and gain not as much as one who completely does the bolt ons and intake and tune.

Pred is really good at suggesting cams so I would pm him back on his thoughts.

If off the shelf is more your style, there is the Thunder racing (Cheater cam), LS6, or even a Hotcam that works with stock setups and gain well.
