Default Does more CI change the sound?

Assuming that 2 motors are running the same cam, will say a 418 LS3 sound different than a 346. I know that you would want to run a bigger cam in the big CI motor, but just assume that its the same cam for convesations sake.

Ok, I think that is a joke, but seriously guys, is there a descernable difference? It seems like it would be louder since it will be moving more air.

Depending on the exhaust setup, it sounds COMPLETELY different. Black8Banger, a member on here, has a GMMG catback on his full exhaust 02 T/A and a GMMG catback on his N/A 402 camaro. The Camaro sounds way different. It is hard to describe it. It's about as different as a Flowmaster catback compared to True duals with bullets. It's not that it sounds bad, its just different.

Well I don't. I know that all this will change the tone of an engine, but will it be noticable? I mean could you here a big cubed motor and tell that it is indeed big cubed just by the sound?

there are some telltale signs, but none that are only from big cubes.

cadence of the cam
'pop' from the compression
'pop' from the exhaust valve opening sooner
deepness from the cubes
headers etc

but it would be hard to tell a diff between a built 346 and a 454, but some probably could

well my LS1 cam only sounded very similiar to my buddies 383 LT1 with same size headers, H PIPE and mufflers, and usually LT1's sound deeper can anyone explain this? I too have wondered how CI CR and all that affects the sound. I would think more compression would be louder and a maybe a bigger CI would be deeper?

i can tell about what size motor/ and cam a car is running...i also have been building and wrenching on race cars since I was about 8. And now I work at a performance shop, so Ive heard my fair share of variety from mild to full blown wild.

And yes there is a bit of a sound difference, the more cubes you have and bigger stroke seems to make it deeper as well as it just sounds like more pressure is coming out of the exhaust.

if you use the same exhaust on the 346 and say a 408 the 408 will be a bit deeper and a tad louder.

overall you will notice a difference but not everyone around you will.

So essentially, my H/C car isn't gonna sound much meaner when i put in the shortblock. Oh well, it is already mean as hell and I guess it would make me even less popular with my neighbors if it were to get any louder.

the sound will definatly be louder as you are probably going with a bigger cam, and proabably have more comression

But it won't be a huge difference.

MOST of the tone a motor makes is in the heads, its all relative to the head chamber size, shape, etc. But headers and exhaust change the tone and sound, loudness etc.

valve lift and LSA of a cam make the biggest differences in sound IMO.
