Default bone stock a4 - 99 ws6 ..best head/cam combo?

i am going to stay bone stock (other than doing some custom airbox work..stock is just completely moronic design) and will be doing heads and cam in the near future. i was just curious what the 'best' combo would be? i am pretty cam number stupid. idle doesnt really bother me that much just as long as it runs fairly reliable. 380 - 420 pretty common numbers HP wise?

again, i will not put any other mods on the car. i have my reasons..so please dont say "dude, get the heads/cam..400 shot of NOS and then a 4800stall converter and you will run 6's" ...its not about that.

You are not doing headers and exhaust work?

In general the 224/224//112-114 cams are the standard I would use. 222 cams work great too but the average gains from 224 cams show that they are probably the best balance of power and reliability and streetability.

IF i do exhaust..its going to be something a bit different than just a new y pipe/can out back. but to answer your question..probably, but i will be keeping the stock exhaust manifolds...so no headers.

btw, can you explain the numbers to me? i know it has to do with lift/duration, but whats what and how does it relate to whatever? again, i am cam stupid. TIA

I would recommend MTI stage 2 heads complimented with a C2 cam.

Good luck

Just about anything bigger than the Comp 212/218 114 LSA will require computer tuning in an A4.
I know people that had to tune with the Comp 216/220 114 LSA cam.

I'm going with MTI Stage 2's with the X1, to be installed week after next. Currently running the B1.

Good luck in your decision!

Ok with me, it's your car but are you counting PCM tuning as a "mod"? If so any stage I heads over there>>>>>>>>>>> and a 212/218 cam or so ought to do the trick.

If doing heads and cam I think you'll needed tuning even if everything else stays stock.

Keeping that LS1 intake instead of an LS6 intake is going to hold you back too. The exhaust manifolds & cat set up and 98-99 cars tend to hold 98-99 cars back more than the revised cast iron manifolds/cats do the 00-02 cars.

Saw a 99 WS6 T/A make a whopping 354rwhp with heads and cam that kept the 99 exhaust manifoldss with an LS1 intake and no real tuning. It had a 216/220 cam. Limiting your shelf intake/exhaust/tuning wise, your car might end up about the same. Later same car made 405rwhp with MAC's & LS6 intake and tuning.

Good Luck

very good info. i am trying to do some different things than the normal route. i will be doing some tuning and some other things, but i dont want to go full bore if you know what i mean. at the most...i will be doing the following

intake, heads/cams, exhaust (stock and two open pipes..hehe, this is going to be different than anyone has seen. given it will add weight, but i dont care about that) and the a4 tuning needed for heads/cam

i am just trying to get good info now on heads/cam and the technical specifics on the cam. i am cam stupid and have zero clue as to what the numbers mean. if anyone can give me any info on the numbers (in a cam stupid way...) i would appreciate it!

I believe that you will be wasting your time without the intake and the headers. I've seen posts around here of folks making around the 400 hp mark on stock heads. The point is that all the components work together. Adding heads to a car without the proper intake and exhaust is a huge waste of money. Go and get a big screen TV.

Full exhaust includes headers. If you arent doing headers and catback/Ypipe then I would not do heads. It will be a waste of your cash

Dual 2.5 inch off the stock manifolds will be a waste of time and sound like *** unless you do an Xpipe/bullet setup.

If you are keeping stock manifolds but doing a Ypipe/catback then go with something like a 224/224 114LSA cam with springs and hardened pushrods.

That with LS1 edit tuning will make decent power for you. I would also strongly consider an aftermarket lid and LS6 intake as well.

Cheers,
Chris
