Default Does a scratch in the combustion chamber ruin the head?

Can this be smoothed out and reused? Or will the scratched area still cause a hot-spot in the chamber?

Yes, you can smooth that out and you'll be fine. Don't leave it as is though, becaues it would create a hot spot. You could smooth it out yourself if you have a dremel.

How did that get there?
If it broke a ring or piston you might need a machine shop to check the valve seats too, for any particles that might have got between the valve and seat and ruined the smooth surface.

I agree, smooth with a dremel, and try to remove as little as possible.
