Crankshaft repair/ DE De De award
Hey tonight I nominate myself for the de de de award for messing up my crank... I was using a 3 jaw puller to pull the damper pulley off and I shoved a 1/2 inch extension into the hole to give my self something for the puller to push against. Anyway, yeah I wasnt thinking but now all the threads are gone ( after running the extension through them instead of pulling the dampner) that the damper bolt bolts too and I dont think I can repair them with a heli coil. So looks like I need a new crank.
I have a 5.3 motor and I wanted to see what my options are other than a stocker. Is there any upgrade like a 5.7 crank that I can just drop in and get some extra bowties?

I think I ran the extension all the way throught the threads . When I put the bolt back in the crank it bottoms out and never even grabs any threads so the only thing I could think of is a heli coil but I dont know if I can get it in that far back.

I've helicoiled my ls1 crank. You have to find a long tap, I forget for sure but I think I may have found mine through mcmaster carr. Then you just basically tap the whole snout for the helicoil just thread the helicoil all the way down. That's how it went for me. I did this after trying the "longer bolt" method of installing a pulley and having it snap off inside the crank, then drilling out the rest of the longer bolt. I'd give that a shot before pulling the crank. Good luck.

I had an old 350 sbc that had stripped threads on the crank. I drilled out all the remaining threads and taped the crank to the next size up bolt. Not sure if this can be done on an LS1, but it worked perfect on the sbc
