Default Cam Swap: Dowel Size Question?

Was just about to pull the cam out today when the dowels I had made were too big to fit. They are a hair over 5/16 and I think that is my problem. My question though is how small can you safely go in dowel size to keep the lifters up when your pulling out the old cam? This is just in case I cannot get an exact 5/16 from work and have to go down in size.

I went w/some 5/16 brake line and pounded it slightly in the shape of a "D" and lubed them up and they work like gangbusters. Have used them on LS1's and LS2 motors....

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

So is everyone using 5/16 or nothing at all?

5/16.. if you cant snag them from work, just save up a for a few weeks, go to home depot, and drop the $0.69 it costs.

because that helps me soo much....

I was just seeing if anyone has used anything really small to hold up the lifters and if it has worked. Curious to see how small you can go to keep the lifters up, thats all.

yeah I got some just under 5/16. Driver side went in like a breeze and I had to grind down a side flat for the passenger side to fit. New cam is in but I still need to get a few other things done before start up...which I hope will be at the end of the weekend if im lucky.

I used a 1/4" on pass side with no problem.

I used a 5/16" on drivers side. The pass side was tight and did not want to go in all the way. I could have ground down one side but I just used a smaller size. It is just for safety anyway. Some people do not use anything. They just spin the cam so the lifters stay up.

I probably could have just pulled the cam since the engine has so little mileage but I wanted to be safe becuase that is just more work I do not need if a lifter fell. Thanks for the input.

i use 5/16 wooden dow rods all the time. after 3-4 cam swaps i pitch them and get a new set(fear of breaking one). i don't cut them down or anything. sometimes i'll get a tight one but i just work it in easy
