Default Measuring cylinder head dimensions: What are "snap guages"?

I see "snap guages" used a lot for measuring cylinder head dimensions. I see it being used for MCSA areas.

What are they? A quick search came up with nothing.

Thanks.

Snap guages look like a "T", except the two ends that go out left and right are spring loaded. You push the ends in and lock in place. Then you put the snap guage in the port and release the lock and the ends snap out to the dimensions of the port. Lock them in place again and remove. Measure the ends to find the dimensions of the port.
