Default Cam Install

I have everything taken apart, down to the step of taking out the cam, and i'm doing the step of taking a 5/16 metal dowel into the holes for the lifters, now what i have noticed is that when the dowels are in completely i can still put my pen magnet in the pushrod hole and push the lifter onto the cam, because as i turn the cam the magnet is moving...Is there something im not doing correctly or what?

The lifters will still move a little bit. I used the wooden rods.

+1 an easy way to see it is all the way back is take a marker and lay the dowel next to the cam and mark it wher it ends . this way you can see when you put the dowel in if it has went the length of cam you are trying to swap .

I was worried too when it came time for that the first time but I realized that I didnt even need them as when I put the new pushrods in, I pushed all the lifters back onto the new camshaft, which is good but I would never pull out a cam witout them, just too risky.
