Default Cam/pulley-fair price to install

I'm having a LS6 re-ringed for oil consumption at the dealer and was going to have some stage 2 heads, cam and UD pulley installed at the same time. The dealer wants $1000 to do this in addition to what they make on the re-ring. It seems alittle high to me, anyone go this route or what a typical chevy dealer would charge to put a cam and pulley on, since the heads are coming off anyways??

Most dealers would refuse to install the cam or aftermarket heads in the first place. BTW if you have them do the install, your engine warranty will be history IMO. However, at shop rate $1000 for heads and cam install is within reason. Seems like they'd do the heads for free since the motor is apart.

Yes they said they would do the heads for almost free, small charge to swap the rockers. $850 was for labor to swap the cams and pulley and $150 for gaskets, etc. I know the warranty is out, but it expires in 3 months anyways. Anyone have this done at a dealer? How much $$$ was it? Thanx!!

1320 performance got hooked up, or is, and for little to nothing I believe. But, the cam labor seems a little high to me. Thats just MHO. I would try and cut a deal with them, bargain him down to $600 for the install with parts/gaskets. I f he bites, cool, if not, haggle more.

$1000 sounds cheap to me considering the dealer shop usually charges a lot more than speed shops to do the same thing. Of course the other side of it is they already have the engine apart anyway, so the install is pretty easy. I know a guy that was having the dealer pull the engine to do some warenty work, and they let him take the engine and do the same stuff you're talking about. Then they did their work, and put the engine back in! He must have had a "special" relationship with them . . .

There are two shops around my area that are willing to do a cam swap for 600 and that will springs, retainers, and pushrods... i dont think they will take that much for the pulley though.

Man 600 for a LS1 cam swap. I should start advertising to do it and charge like 100 dollars and a case of beer. Good luck with it.

I've been quoted from $450 to $860 for a cam install, if that helps anyway. I think those two numbers may be on the more extreme ends of the spectrum, though. I have very little doubt that a speed shop couldn't do it cheaper.

That's what a fella on LS1.com was doing. Got a lot of business, too. I would imagine Texas has a larger LS1 population than PA, though. It's something to consider. The demand is certainly there (at least on a national level).

Since you said LS6, I would assume you have a Vette. Pulley installs on a Vette and 5x's harder than on an F-body. Access isnt there. As for the cam - I know most places charge about $600 for that alone. So another $400 for the pulley may be fair.

Thanks for the comments, guys, I'm going to try to get them to go down a bit more, but, as you say, the pulley is a pain. I'll find out thurs or friday.

I get quoted $750.00 here in S. FL. But, the tech said he would do heads and cam for that price too.

We did a cam swap on a C5 and the steering made it such a pain. We had to go back and do the pulley a week later. THAT was a pain because the steering had to come out again.

I know of professional installs done for less than $450 for cam and underdrive.
