Default Oil pump "bypass" valve question

I removed my stock 99 oil pump and hand ported another stock oil pump from a 2004 LS1 motor with low milage. I followed the how to document posted by 405HP ZO6 here (great writeup). My question is the shimming of the bypass valve and what to use. I had great oil pressure with my last stock pump 40PSI idle hot and this was with a pinched O-Ring (found this when I removed the pump). I am replacing because of the stories I read on early year pumps. Should I leave the bypass valve stock without shims like the one I just removed?

If mine had 40psi hot, I wouldn't bother with the shims. That's plenty of pressure.
