Default Need opinion on cam for my set up..my current cam sux!

I have TEA stage 2 5.3 liter's on my car right now with a 224/230 .568"/.573" 114 cam...I dont have an LS6 intake yet but i have ported tb,slp longtubes (wich gave me 37rwhp with orp and cut-out!)asp pulley, plug's,wires, all free mods, lid, maf, smooth bellow, converter (3500),stock 10-bolt with 3.42's,steel d/s,all emisions deleted..ok the car made 376 rwhp and like 364 rwt..WTF?..runs good at the track..but still slower than my old cam only hot cam set up!! so i am going to add 4* duration on the intake side and see what happens..228/230 .571"/.573" 112 and add an LS6 intake to the combo and see what happens then i guess..gunna bump the CR up a little with a .035" cometic gasket (where can i get those BTW? and did they ever fix the leaking problem?) Anyway's my goal is 400hp through the A4...im guessing 395 with the new cam and intake manifold..but cam suggestions are welcome nothing over 228* intake though..no PTV clearance for me i dont think..non milled heads 2.02 intake valve though and the .035 gasket..Thank's,

Carter

That new cam sounds good, but you might as well get the XE-R lobes if you're getting another cam. You'll get a little more power with better idle quality.

Yeah I was wondering about the XE-R lobes...I have 987 dual spring's though and I thought the X-ER had to be .590" lift or higher? anyway's how would i go about getting an XE-R lobe ground on this cam..because it's a cam off of www.racenet.net and i can never get ahold of comp cams themselfs..any idea's? also where can i get the .035 cometic gasket's? thank's,

Carter

Futral also has a 228/230 with more lift than the cam from racenet. You may want to contact them for more info. I'm really curious as to how the TEAs will like the cam.

I thought futral's was 226/230? anyways i dont want much more lift than .570" because we dont need it anyways..flow stall at .550" is about normal..but also because i would not like to make valvespring changes an anual thing per month lol...I want an XE-R cam..but I cant find any good ones..anybody have a list on similar 228/230 XE-R cams and where i can get one? Thank's

Cam choices aside... using a .035 cometic with a stock bottom end could be a problem. Most builders opt for a .040 minimum piston to head clearance. If you take .035, and subtract .06, which is how much the stock ls1 piston is out of the hole, that leaves your piston to head clearance .029 very very close..

I've got the Comp Cams grind numbers for XE and XE-R cams. Tell me the duration you want and I'll post up the info to place an order. Or you could call a sponsor and order one up. Paul at TR is great to talk to about cams...He's always been really helpful to my buddy and I.

why dont you get an ls6 intake first, Im not a big fan of the tea heads{everyone knows that} but it will make more power with the ls6 intake. maybe your cam now is fine. Did you make the 376 hp with a locked or unlocked verter and was the cutout open. I dont know why it goes slower than your cam only, maybe it makes less torque. good luck let us know how you make out

A 228/228 sounds like it will work good for you.

That's what I was thinking as well..Maybe I lost some tourqe..I actually gained 15 rwt...but i also lost 4 mph in the 1/4 with the head's/cam set up!! Anyway's I like my cam for N20 and all...but i want more N/A power...something I can feel i guess...oh well.. LOL Keith alright you win 228/228 it is. Hopefully that and the new head gaskets with ls6 intake will be perfect.Later,

Carter

well, I guess thats why they say mph is a product of hp. did you lose or gain horse power after the heads and new cam, I know this is a touchy subject but I would suggest you have your heads independantly flowed, I would use thunder, just to see what cam to match them with before you just pick one out of the air, there is alot of talk about some tea heads not flowing exactly as advertised. when you know exactly what they flow then have thunder or someone match a cam to it. you will make the most power doing it that way

232/230 using XE-R lobes on a 114LSA with a 114-115ICL.
The 987's will take .600 lift if they were installed at the stock height of 1.800 as coilbind for those springs is 1.150.
The problem is that at 1.200 spring pressure is only 328lbs. Even with TI retainers this will not be enough pressure to hold the lifters to the XE-R lobes & you'll get valvefloat.
To be quite honest I do not know why most don't stick with the 918's & stock retainers. You could either swap to this setup installed at 1.800-1.750 or install a set of 914 springs installed at 1.800, but you'll also have to get new retainers with these springs as well.

Carter, i would do the ls6 intake before you do anyhting, then you can see what another cam should do after that. tea also has a new valve job that they say will extend the flow of the heads. dont just throw a cam in there without knowing what the heads flow and stall, dont go by your flow sheet from tea, alot of guys are seeing different results on independant benches than there flow sheet. tea seems like a good company that will back there product your heads may or may not be good but I suggest you know for sure so your not pulling your hair out and changing cams left and right to find one that works. just my suggestion, im just trying to help

what are you using for tuning?
Have you auto tapped your runs?
are your numbers through a locked converter?

Ne14a6t9...Thank's man..I know TEA's arent flowing exactly what they are supposed to..but I have gathered alot of info on independant flow testing of these head's and they seem to stall right at .550 and peak around 280's int and low 200's at the same lift exh through the low lift to high lift they climb strongly so I am satisfied wit the flow number's for now untill I pull them off and re-port them myself after a while..I got 303 int @.575 and 221 exh @ .575 myself with a set of crappy 98' head's and a 216 cc intake volume so i can improve these head's im sure
Tuning is still on from my HOT cam set up but I am running 30* timing with no KR and 12.9:1 A/F so i dont think tuning would help too much..maybe a little...just wanna try this new cam and then re port the head's with an LS6 intake on it and see how she does..I will post my resluts of before and after flow number's as well as dyno #'s...Thank's guy's,

Carter
