Default down to earth mods

well im starting to gather parts to throw a cam in my car and i need help:

i have a car with like 96k on the clock had it since it had 30 on the clock maintance excellent at all times..im not looking to drag race my car, drive in nascar or f1 anytime soon, i dont want the car to lope and die, i dont want the car to make the power all at 7000rpms,

im basically looking for a cam that would work great across the rpm range to the rem limiter at 6000rpm, its an a4 with hooker headers and TD's, lid....i want a cam that later i can throw in some heads, im planning on keeping my ls6 intake too maybe porting the original TB,

i have now 2.73 or whatever it comes with and will go to a 342 or 3.73, stall maybe but i doubt it, the car gets driven now one day a week and i want to buy the all supporting mods like oil pump, rods, retaineers, rockers and spring at first and whatever else is suggested, but before than i need to know what cam i should go with, i am most def going to get the car tunned by a pro once i get all my parts.. i want to finish up this car to start hopefully my 1st gen project next year with a lsx swap but thats another topic i know nothing about yet...

i have read a all the threads and lots of them are great help, but i still cant make up my mind lots of people opinion of whats and enjoyable ride is different to others......

thanks for all you help in advance hope someone can throw down some factual info on this topic...o yea and i was hoping for 430 at the wheels if possible
i was hoping that someone will post up some real life results,

ms4, trex, or g5x4, these cams are actually baby cams compared to what could be ran

you will need

valve springs
timing chain and sprockets
water pump gaskets
timing cover gasket
tune
new crank bolt
(2) 5/16" 3 foot long threaded rod ( to hold lifters )

If your wanting 430 cam only then your going to have to get a cam that lopes pretty hard, do worry about the dieing part though because if you get a good tuner to tune it that will be illrelivant. if your wanting 430 with the heads later on i suggest a TR 224, that is a mild cam that puts down consistant numbers.

stall maybe but i doubt it
First, your gonna need a stall, and that will help out with e.t.'s better than that cam will. You being A4, with a 224 cam, you wont be at 400whp. Just shy I think. Who cares about dyno numbers anyway, they are just bragging right. Timeslips are what matter. I've known Supras with 500whp with a single turbo running high 12's...They cant hook it or it doesn't start spooling till 4K. Just because you have big numbers on the dyno, doesn't mean you will have low ones at the track.

There's always the g5x1, g2 or g5 cam from LG Motorsports. Pretty mild, and lots of torque across the rpm range as requested.

You could always get Pat G to spec you a custom cam. He's had many happy customers.

I would say the G5x1 cam would be a nice blend of power and great street manner and with heads and a good tune you will make very decent reliable power. What heads did you plan on going with? AFR 205/TFS215 are pricey but proven to deliver more power and torque than most ported gm castings.

And also with your upgraded valve train you can have the rev limiter set higher say 6400rpms. Mine is at 6800 due to peak power at 6500 so I can hold 3rd a little longer.
