Default Freshen up or no?

My '01 SS recently hit 122,000 mi and I was wondering if I need to take the engine out and freshen it up i.e. check the bearings, replace pushrods, or anything of that nature. To add to it I have no idea how the previous owner treated the car, but I'm assuming not very good due to the fact that it was a repo... Thanks for any answers!

It won't hurt to freshen it up but i am about to hit 122k and my car runs very strong! It is a cam only car that has seen a few hits of nitrous and i plan to spray it some more soon. It all depends on how well the car has been maintained.

How does it run? Burn oil? how's the oil pressure? There are a few guys on here with 200,000+ so they will go for a long time without issue if treated right. Mine lasted 84k , but I drove it real hard.

Hell, if you got money to spare and your planning on making a substantial amount of power, go ahead and spring for built valvetrain and forged bottom end and with the exception of the crank. Just my .02

It runs alright, there is a slight hesitation between flooring the gas pedal and it taking off. The oil pressure is also getting a little finicky. It'll drop to 20 psi every once in a while and stay there for a little bit. Next, it'll burn about a quart of oil in the first 2000 mi after an oil change and then it won't use any until I change it again.

Could that possibly be a bearing?

Any suggestions about what upgrades to use with a budget?

Well if your going to take it apart then you could have it cleaned up and go with a 347. Get some new pistons and rods and do the bearings and stuff. All depends on your budget, sounds like your doing the work cept maybe the machine work?

SDPC and TSP have good prices on assemblies I think Weber does as well as Speed inc

Your correct I'll be doing it all. Unless I find something majorly wrong I might reuse the pistons and rods to save a lil $$$, or unless I find a set for a great price. And this might be a dumb question so I'm sorry in advance but whats 347? lol

3.905.. clean the bore up .005

You could look for some used forged stuff as well to save money

quick search of TSP pulls up this for $1399, wihc includes crankshaft, you call them and get it without for even less money.

Ah, my bad... brain fart. Also I've been looking at upgrading to an LS6 cam and would I have to change the springs with that?

Yep, not a huge cost their though, I've got some PAC 1218's for $160 delivered that would be a good drop in. I also have an Edelbrock cam package that I offer, very mild cam but does add some kick but it adds to the cost. I'm sure you can find a used ls6 cam for very reasonable money and then do a spring swap and be good to go.

Is there a noticable difference between the LS1 and LS6 cams or should I just spend the extra money and get a little bigger cam?

Thats a hard call, my guess is the ls6 nets a little more hp but nothing to write home about. The mild Edlebrock I'm talking about is even more than that but again it's a small cam. The idea of it is you dont have to retune after installing it. You do gain hp and tq.

A TR224 is a tried and true street/strip cam. Most people call it small but it's medium sized. Great all around cam, plenty of info on it if you do a search.

But when you start adding hp the rest of the drivetrain takes more abuse. the 10 bolt rear is notoriously weak and the clutch isnt the greatest either so you open the door...
