Default MSD Coils Vs Stock on LS1

What is the general concensus on performance gains going to the MSD's? I would have a hard time believing it would make a big (actually any) difference, but had another person tell me they helped his car a lot.

Based on what I have heard, you can spend the $600 (I believe thats how much they cost) elsewhere and see better gains. The stock LS1 coils are more than enough unless you are really talking some major power.

Ive seen big turbo cars not even really needing them. Def not a perf loss for keeping stockers in there. Kinda like upgrading the intake on a LT1, pointless for the most part.

I have also read that MSD coils have a high failure rate.

I have to agree with all thats been posted. Hi failure rate, not needed, $600 can be spent better elsewhere

MSD are junk! Stockers put out more spark and last a long time! Talked to people that own the Pro charger Pro mod and i walked up and said hey they are stock 6.0 GM truck coils and he said yup! We tested every coil out and it put out the most spark and was most consistent!

I had two "out of the box" failures on MSD coils.

Exposed to engine heat, they would stop working.

As for quality of spark, all I can say that is that it looks like the Frankenstein movie if you unplug the coil wire.

It won't feel like a lawnmower jolt either!

YEOWWW!

Are they worth it?

Looks- yes

Performance improvement- questionable

^^Thats exactly what I did too. MAD coils are total junk for the LS1 cars. They definetly screwed up on that ignition component.

Get a set of truck coils, and spend the 600 on a cam kit or something to make HP.

If you like red coils go to home depot and buy a can of emergency red spray paints and save yourself a ton of money ... the stock coils do not need to be replaced...... I moved mine out of sight so I didn't have to paint them..

Stock LS7 coils here...
Made 1100rwhp @ 13psi which is roughly 1375-1425 crank @ 13psi
No issues with blowing spark out
No issues with a small plug gap(.025) @ Idle

Seriously, what kind of paint should be used on them?

I like what you've done here. Is that paint available in NBM?

Just the regular $4.95 a can spray paint from home depot will work in "emergengy red" ... if you want to paint them NBM you can find cans of duplicolor in NBM and clear coat at auto parts stores..but if you want it to really look good have a body shop do the painting with real NBM paint.
