Default What cam for stock exhaust manifolds and 2.73's.

I don't want headers for various reasons, but I will be deleting the cats and running Bassani True duals, running a stall converter (have yet to decide on what stall rpm and STR), and keeping the 2.73s for the good highway mileage on my '02 T/A. Been searching and searching the threads and seems like a popular cam for a car with stock exhaust manifolds would be the Thunder Racing CheaTR cam or the Old Man Cam. But from what I gather, they make power in the mid-range and up, which is not good for a 2.73 car that needs more torque to get it moving. So would it be better to stick to a GM Performance Parts cam like an LS1 Hot cam and the like since that is basically a modest upgrade from stock and can be compatible for a car with stock manifolds and 2.73's? Thanks.

a cam that makes mid-range and up power with be in those rpm's anyway with a big stall converter.

If I knew you and you had the old man cam i would make fun of you. It's not easy to swap cams, so if your going to do it then make it worth the effort. Most ppl wish they would have went bigger when going with small cams. And if you do decide to go with a bigger cam you better get rid of those stock exhaust manifolds

Kept doing more browsing about, and yeah you're right. I'm really limiting myself without any headers. I figured the manifolds on the '01-'02s were as good as shorties anyways, but I know that nothing beats LT's.

It sounds like you are looking for a lowend "truck" cam. The cam that I'm running is that kind of cam. It makes modest power gains in the low to mid range (based on 60ft & 1/8 mile mph) and a little bit up top (based on 1/4 mile trap). You will be "on the cam" from right off idle with a torquey feel while putt-putting around town.

It works well with stock torque converter and stock manifolds/cats. With this cam, 1.85 rockers, a 3500 stall, skinnies and short belt mod, I hit the ETs in my sig. This is all with STOCK MANIFOLDS & CATS!

The comp 206/212 in your sig, right? Is that something that can be found in the usual Jegs/Summit catalog? What are the specs?

If I gotta mess with my manifolds, I think I'll go all the way with LT's.

Your going to do all that exhaust work, and not spend the extra hour to install LT's?

Since when is installing a set of LT's a 1 hour job? Perhaps with a lift and air tools, something I don't happen to have.

Ok fine, 2 hours. That's how long it took me to take stock manifolds off this car on jack stands. Your really going to regret wasting money on that bassani when you could easily get a set of pacesetter's,ory, and catback for the same amount of money, and gain a lot more power.

I see. But, searching here I found a thread that the Bassani was worth 15rwhp over a Borla catback. And the aluminized version of the Bassani is $700ish, about the price of a good stainless single system. Hmmmm, so many damn choices...LOL.

I call bullshit on that 15hp over a borla.

Just get a cutout if your worried about power.

pacesetter lt's with ory and cutout on stock catback.

cheapest route to go

I had this setup but didn't like sound of stock

Your really going to regret not going to LT's

Any clearance issues with the Pacesetters? Heat, rust, plug access? I'm in the Tampa area. How much did Formato's tune cost you? I was thinking a MadZ28 saver tune to eliminate the rear o2's and lower the fan temps; is that what Jeremy's "small" tune consisted of? Thanks for the replies.

no clearance issues with pacesetters and they're not that hard to install. I have a ton of air tools and barely used them so dont worry about that. wait4me does good mail order tunes.

If you are going to go the whole way and get a cam atleast get the supporting mods or you will most likely regret it down the road. Plus with the 2.73's that thing is really going to be a highway car. Either way have fun and make a choice that you will be happy with.

Is that a custom grind or something off the shelf? I've seen you pop up A LOT on my camshaft searches here, thanx for the advice.

You are pissing in the wind if you keep the 2.73s. I had a 98 TA with 3.23's hot cam, lid, lt's, duals and got 22mpg 50/50 city/hwy. 2.73s are not worth it. I ran 13.0 with stock stall and a 2.1 60"

Higher stalls do not like hwy gears. If you do save money for a new tranny b/c the fluid will get hot and cook it.
