porting sounds good.. what about springs and push rods?? mayb even rockers? thinking about a 224 cam (heard its the largest smog legal cam in california)
dont wanna go wild but just slight upgrades (mid length headers/ ls6 intake/ported tb/224 cam[or jus the 00' vette cam]) thats about it) think i can get away without a tune???

I was going to go with a 02 style ls6 cam.I ended up going with tr style 224 (115 LSA) cam instead.Bought some stock ls6 vette heads used for a good price. After a lot of research and talking to my mechanic,I came to the conclusion that the ls6 cam was a waste of time.
I also decided to use some ported heads. If you are going to install the stuff yourself and get the stuff for almost nothing than WTF.I would think about it before you decide. The 00vette cam is not much better than the cam you have. This stuff always turns into a lot more than you expected.Pushrods, and while your in their melling 295 or ? and.. ls2 timing chain, springs. You will need a tune too to do it right(224).I'm glad I didn't go the ls6 cam and stock 243's.I guess it's all about your goals and what makes you happy.Think about it and do some reasearch before you decide. That's what I would do.The tr224 is a really good drivable, good performing cam. What will make you happy and what's your budget? How much power do you want?

really what i wanna do is just beef it up.. prepare it for a race or 2 every so often.. (street) dnt wanna have stock and when i do decide to race i bend a push rod or 2 b/c of a misshift.. so pretty much porting the 00' vette heads sounds good.. just need some good pushrods, springs and mayb rockers.. timing chain sounds good.. budget wise.. i dnt wanna go all out or too cheap.. so its about average meaning if i have to fork out the cash, f*k it no prob.. what top end would go with the 224r cam? (rods, springs, mayb rckrs)
remember i gtta keep it smog legal..

i have the ls6 2002 vette cam and wish i'd gone slightly bigger. it runs /idles smooth (600/700 rpm), no lope, but lower than expected dyno #s. some people say its a good blower cam. the board likes tr224, i called lunati and described what i wanted and they recommended 221/221 dur 560 lift on a 115 lsa. i wish i'd gone with either of those and i'm a conservative person. just my 2 cents! stock vette ls1 heads would not be an improvement over yours. get at least ls6, just pay a grand for stage 1 ls6 heads cast#243 that flow 307 cfm intake at 600 lift 215 exhaust.

i bought mine from texas speed 2 years ago for $900. they come with steel valves, not stock zo6 vette sodium filled light weight (those are big $) i think PATRIOT and possibly livernois also sell budget heads. if you port your stock ls1 heads with stage 1 porting you'll only get about 280cfm maybe 290, ls6 heads flow better. now they only come with ls6 springs so if you might put in a bigger cam down the road think about upgrading the springs. ls6 are good up to 580 lift. stage 2 porting ls1 heads i believe get you about 300cfm, ls6 stage 2 can flow 320 ish plus! just food for thought.
