Default ?? for those with built motors.... (non stock internals)

What oil pressure do you normally run at idle and in the rpms?? Also what weight oil are you using?

Im having an oil pressure issue. Its too low I have Eagle rods, Federal Mogel bearing and a ARE oil pump and my OP sucks. I also have a 10W30 oil in it. The oil pressure is great when cold, but it fades away pretty bad. Im thinking the oil is too thin since nothing in the motor is stock, so not stock bearing clearences anymore. It seems once the oil is hot, its like water and very thin and not keeping the pressure. Im thinking of going to a 20W50 to see if its any better and if it is indeed the oil thinning too much. I sure hope so.

I have no knocking or anything, so I know there is no bearing issues and all the clearences checked out. Im really hoping its not the oil pump thats bad

Just looking for your opinion

I may contact ARE on Monday to try and get another pump if the 20w50 doesnt help. The pressure is awesome when cold, just when everything is good and hot, its hard to get 45 psi, even at 5500 rpms

Typical build, bone-stock oil pump, 75 psi at cold idle, 57 psi at hot idle, 62 psi at hot cruise. My bearing tolerances are set on the close side, but they're all really even so it turns over with a tiny ratchet

I feel your pain. I've been running about 40 PSI at idle up until the last two months when things started heating up this year. I'm seeing it drop down to 20 PSI now at warm idle and running at 34 PSI at speed. The odd thing is cold starts are still a nice solid 45 PSI.

So my thought process was, new higher stall looser converter is making me run hotter (even though I don't see it in the coolant temps) and therefore thinning the oil more than before.

The question is at what idle PSI would people start to fear for their engine?

Rick
